Hey, You! Get Off of My Cloud!

BusinessSouthwest's about to start charging people for occupying more than one seat. Seems fair to me. Now if we can figure out a way to charge folks who are smellier, louder, more annoying, ... The report's here.
Some of the objectors have a dizzying logic. “If a person takes up more than one seat, that's not the problem of the person, that's the problem of the seat.” I wonder: why she thinks a business is obligated to charge every consumer the same price. (After all, the problem of the seat is actually that it's uncomfortable. If the plane were dynamically configurable, so that passengers all consumed and payed for precisely the space, air, etc. they needed, would that be unfair of the airlines to implement? if she tries the same logic at the ice cream parlor. “That 5-year old kid got more ice cream than he could eat for $1. I demand that you give me more ice cream than I can eat for $1. It's Nazism if you don't.” why they think one group of people (smaller folks) should subsidize the consumption by another group (larger folks) when the difference is easily measurable.
That said, I'm not gargantuan --- 5'8” and 160 lbs. --- and if there's to be a single seat size for all passengers, I don't object to it being a little larger.

So then I just have to pay for 1 seat, right?

If they want to make a logical solution, just put four \"fat people\" seats in the back of every plane, and create a row of \"skinny people\" seats as well. Doesn\'t that make more sense?

Actually, they could just have 3 sections: small, medium and large.

These days you would think the airlines have bigger issues to deal with than this.

Leg-room

Airlines have always had more leg-room for those willing to pay -- first class and some have taken this further (American\'s more room in coach, United\'s Plus category.) Maybe a few rows of bigger seats for more money in coach is the way to go so that the fast increasing number of bigger people don\'t have to buy two seats but can just buy 1.5 seats (in a two seats replacing 3 seat configuration.)

However, it seems likely that we will see bigger seats at a higher price to all, like we have in movie theaters who have been battling various lobbiest groups over seat sizes for the last few years or in parking lots across California where compact spots are being removed to fit all the bigger cars people are driving.

As airlines fail, start-ups think they can make money competeing with them for the long-tail.
