Morocco and Spain battle over island
After 40 years of being uninhabited and in disputed control, the Morocco military siezed a tiny island just off of the coast of Morocco last week and Spain repaid the favor today sending in 30 soldiers and 5 battleships. All part of the unusual control of the area. England still controls Gibraltar (officially since a 1713 treaty) which is on the southern tip of Spain while Spain controls Cueta which is on the northern tip of Morocco (important to certain politicians in Spain because Franco launched his civil war from there in '36).
I would like to believe they are fighting for the pride of controlling the island believed to be one of the Pillars of Hercules. Morocco claims Spain only wants the island for the fish found nearby while Morocco wants to stop drug trafficing and al-Qaeda terrorist activities. However, Morocco's action occured during wedding celibrations for Morocco's king and the king has said Spain must be expelled from "Moroccan" soil.
