NFL Preview 2002: AFC West

SportThe division loses only Seattle, who wasnít really a rival with anyone, but certainly makes the division softer. Oakland is the two time defending champions, and I see no reason why they will not repeat. Denver ruled the roost prior to that, but is still trying to regain their form as they return players from injuries. Kansas City and San Diego still donít have enough talent to even push for a wild card. OAKLAND: (12-4) is clearly still in position to make a Super Bowl trip, after being so close over the past two seasons. Yes, they are an aging team, but the players they have over 30 are still very productive. Gannon has resolved his contract issue, and is ready to lead the team. Rice and Brown make up a rare duo of future Hall of Fame receivers. Garner and Wheatley are capable of handling the running game behind a strong, deep offensive line. Roland Williams is not the tight end they expected when they signed him last season, but they drafted Jolley to challenge him. Jerry Porter is starting to show signs at the #3 wide receiver position, and Marcus Knight might make his presence felt after tearing up NFL Europe. Overall, this offense is very good and scored 22 points or more on 12 occasions including the playoffs, going 2-4 when they scored fewer. The defense showed holes, yielding 24 points or more 8 times during 18 games including the playoffs, although they were able to go 5-3 in those contests. They either signed or drafted a player at every defensive position, however, so this could turn into one of the better units, especially in the AFC. Rod Woodson moves into a starting safety role, long a problem area, and Philip Buchanan was signed to take the spot of retired Eric Allen who had clearly lost a step. Linebacker was finally addressed with the signings of Gerland Dixon, Bill Romanowski, and Mike Jones, and drafting Napoleon Harris in the first round. All should see time with only unit leader Greg Biekert assured of holding his starting spot from last yearís group. William Thomas retired, and Elijah Alexander was released. The defensive line suffered a blow when Regan Upshaw was lost for the season to injury, but the signing of John Parella and return of pass rusher Trace Armstrong leaves the unit strong enough to hold up, although they did lose tackle Grady Jackson to the Saints. Offensive lineman Steve Wisniewski retired, but the line is deep enough to hold up. The draft produced the aforementioned Buchanan, Harris and Jolley, and also monster offensive lineman Langston Walker who was taken at #53 overall. All four could make an impact in the very near future. They open the year against Seattle, followed by a visit to hostile Pittsburgh and a home game against Tennessee. The schedule maker was kind, putting their trip to Buffalo in week 3 and the only remote chance of inclimate weather actually comes on November 11 in Denver. After that the only road games are in warm climates (Arizona, San Diego, Miami). Week 4 could be a Super Bowl preview in St. Louis, followed by a home game against San Diego and a trip to Kansas City. Anything less than 5-2 at that point would be surprising. Their toughest stretch follows, with San Francisco coming over the bridge for a game, followed by a trip to Denver and a visit from New England. Still, they should come out 6-3 prior to their visit to Arizona. Then the NY Jets visit, followed by a trip through San Diego and Miami. They close against Denver and Kansas City at home. With 6 games against playoff teams, there is no reason to expect less than 12-4 unless they drop an egg (reference last yearís 34-31 OT loss to Arizona) or two.

DENVER: (10-6) was one game away from winning the division last season, a 38-28 road loss to Oakland. So it is not a stretch to anticipate a playoff rush. Griese is a solid, but fragile quarterback, and with Frerotte gone it is imperative he stays healthy. Rod Smith is an elite wide receiver, but he is really the only threat at wideout. McCaffrey is back from injury, but he is getting old. Rob Moore was brought in to see if he can still bring something to table, which is doubtful. Kevin Kasper is just not very good, and rookie Ashley Lelie will be great in a year or two, probably the only good news at the position. In spite of this, the team now has 3 capable pass catching tight ends since Shannon Sharpe has returned to town. They also have a solid running game with a trio of guys who can run the ball in feature back Terrell Davis, Olandis Gary and Mike Anderson. They also drafted Clinton Portis. Defensively they are solid, but not great, having held opponents to 21 points or fewer in 10 games, going 7-3 in those games. The offense needs to stay consistent to keep the pressure off. Free agency cost them very little other than Frerotte and linebacker Bill Romanowski. Fullback Howard Griffith left, but Mike Anderson is moving from halfback to fill his spot. Sharpe is really the only addition of any magnitude. The draft produced Lelie and Portis, which is probably enough. If any of the other players make an impact, it is gravy. It wonít take long to find out what this team is made of because they open against St. Louis followed by a trip to San Francisco, possibly creating an 0-2 hole. They host Buffalo, then travel to Baltimore before returning home for San Diego and Miami. Then it is off to Kansas City and New England, with Oakland waiting for them when they get back. They will probably be 6-3 when the visit Seattle, then they face Indianapolis at home. They travel to San Diego and the NY Jets in crucial games to determine if they will stay in the race. That close by hosting Kansas City, visiting Oakland and drawing Arizona at home. A 10-6 finish sounds about right.

KANSAS CITY: (5-11) put themselves in a 1-6 hole to start 2001, but played fairly well in the second half to finish 6-10. It remains to be seen if they can ride that momentum to success this season. The biggest issue is getting the best tight end in the NFL (by far) Tony Gonzalez off the basketball court and signed to a contract. They made a good move by replacing wide receiver Derrick Alexander with reliable Johnnie Morton. The others who will see time are Eddie Kennison, Snoop Minnis and Sylvester Morris. Both Minnis and Morris are coming off injuries, but are young, exciting players. Still, this is no Rams offense. The biggest plus is the emergence of feature back Priest Holmes, who had a monster season. If Trent Green can utilize his targets and eliminate some turnovers, this offense could thrive. Last year they struggled, scoring 24 points or more 7 times (4-3 record) but another 7 times they put up 18 points or less (0-7 record). Defensively, they are not the unit they used to be, but they are still decent, especially at home. Linebacker Donnie Edwardsí departure certainly wonít help, although he was the only real loss in free agency, since wide receiver Derrick Alexander was replaced by Morton. Other than that, they basically just re-signed all their players, although they did get offensive lineman Willie Roaf and replaced kicker Todd Peterson with veteran Morten Andersen. In the draft they went with a defensive tackle with their first 2 selections, and didnít pick again until #107 when they picked up a fullback. Other than that all they got were a pair of linebackers in the fifth and seventh rounds. They open at Cleveland and home to Jacksonville, which should ease them into the season, but they follow that by hosting Miami and traveling to the NY Jets and San Diego. It is possible they will be 1-5 but likely will manage a 2-4 mark. A tough stretch follows, as Denver and Oakland come to town, followed by a trip to San Francisco. Can you say 2-7? They host Buffalo, travel to Seattle, and then host Arizona and St. Louis, probably moving to 4-9. The close of their schedule is a trip to Denver, visit from San Diego and visit to Oakland. I canít see any reason to expect more than 5-11 from this team.

SAN DIEGO: (3-13) got off to a promising start last season, winning their first 3 and opening the year 5-2. Then the roof caved in with 9 straight losses. The offense is probably to blame, having scored over 20 points just twice in that stretch, but the defense was uncharacteristically porous, yielding 20 or more in all but two games during that period after holding teams to 14 or fewer in 3 of the first 7. Doug Flutie is still the starting quarterback, but it is only a matter of time, and losses, before second year man Drew Brees takes over. Thatís a good thing because Brees is a competitor. Tomlinson had a solid rookie year, but needs to improve his conditioning because he wore down in the second half of the season. Curtis Conway is the only wide receiver worth anything, with Tim Dwight (a speedy kick returner) and a pair of untested players in Reche Caldwell and Trevor Gaylor also expected to see time. With a ton of free agents this offseason, this is unexcusable. As of the time I am writing this, Antonio Freeman is still available, and would clearly be the #1 on this team. Drafting Reche Caldwell in the third round was a decent move, but he is two years away from doing anything. Tight end Freddie Jones was let go after a down year, replaced by Stephen Alexander who wonít excite anyone. Also let go was their second best wideout, Jeff Graham. <p>Defensively they have always been good, and the additions of tackle Jason Fisk and Donnie Edwards, who they absolutely stole from the Chiefs, should really help. Fifth overall pick Quentin Jammer is a shutdown corner, and will make an immediate impact. The start of the season also bodes well, with visits to Cincinnati and Arizona sandwiched around a home game against Houston. They could land at 3-0 again before a visit from New England and trip to Denver bring them back to earth. Kansas City stops by, then it is off to Oakland before coming back to face the NY Jets, which leaves them optimistically 4-4 at the break, but likely 3-5. The tough stretch continues with a visit to St. Louis, home game against San Francisco, visit to Miami, and home stand against Denver and Oakland. If you are counting, that is a 7 game stretch against teams that were 8-8 or better in 2001. They close in frigid Buffalo, at Kansas City, and home to Seattle. It is not unlikely they will lose 9 of 10, probably costing their head coach his job. I canít see them finishing much better than 4-12.

ESPN's Dan Le Betard conducted a stinging interview with MLB commissioner Rob Manfred on Wednesday, grilling los angeles angels of anaheim jersers the commissioner on the details of the Miami Marlins sale to a group led by Derek Jeter. The conversation was contentious from the start, with Le Betard saying, "Baseball has been really bad to South Florida for many years, and I don't believe baseball deserves a single customer in South Florida," just moments before introducing the commissioner. It only got more heated from there. Le Betard bluntly asked whether or not Manfred knew of Jeter's plan to cleveland indians jersers slash the Marlins' payroll. Manfred denied having knowledge of any of Jeter's specific plans for the group while going through the approval process. "We are starting with a chicago white sox jersers lie, Rob," washington nationals jersers Le Batard said. "That's where we're starting." Manfred continued to insist that decisions such as the miami marlins jersers ones Jeter has made to cut the Marlins' budget were made at a local level, independent of his purview as commissioner. "We did not have player-specific plans from the Miami Marlins or any other team that we approve in the ownership process." On Thursday, Le Batard said during his show that he had seen the "Project Wolverine" boston red sox jersers proposal Jeter's group washington nationals jersers put together for MLB and knew the commissioner was not being truthful. This was echoed by Barry Jackson at the Miami Herald cincinnati reds jersers who reported that Jeter's plan was vetted and approved by MLB, and that that plan included slashing the team's budget from $115 million to $85 million. "A source directly involved in the Marlins sales process, after hearing the Le Batard interview, said, via text: 'Commissioner detroit tigers jersers said was not aware of [Jeter] plan to slash payroll. Absolutely not true. They request and receive the operating plan from all bidders. "'Project Wolverine [the name for Jeter's plan] called on his group to reduce payroll to $85 million. This was vetted and approved by MLB prior to approval by MLB. Every [Jeter] investor and non investor has the Wolverine financial plan of slashing payroll to $85 million. wholesale baseball jersers Widely circulated."
