Doubleplusludicrous

PoliticI don't know the background, or what really happened in this story. Claim is, a teacher was reprimanded for using the word "niggardly"....

It seems likely that, since the teacher is cooperating, she probably did use the word precisely because it sounds similar to a racial slur.

But I don't ever remember taking offense to people using the word KITE, when I was a kid. I read stories and instructions with words like fop, chink, day-glo, etc with no observably ill effect, probably because KIDS DON'T THINK THE "BAD" THINGS UNLESS THEY'RE TAUGHT TO.

If someone's offended because they are ignorant, can't we just explain things to them? (On the other hand, fourth graders rarely need "niggardly" in their vocabulary, so the teacher's intent is suspect.)

never heard of the word

I aced vocabulary tests all through high school, and not once did that word come up, much less at the age of 9. It is silly for her to have used it, and if we had to assume (an awful thing to do) then clearly the evidence points to her doing it on purpose.

However, people need to get over being hyper sensitive about such unimportant things. She didn\'t use the word directed at a student, or in reference to a human being, so who really cares? As David pointed out, there are other words that sound similar to racist terms that get spoken millions of times every day, should we erase them from the vocabulary? Shoule we make it a crime to speak those words?

I am tired of hearing about petty complaints like this which are perpetuating the separation of races. Do black people realize that when they shine a light on these things it is extremely divisive? The sooner everyone says \"big deal\" to nonsense like this, the sooner it will be a moot point.
