NFL Power Rankings 9/10/02

After a week with 3 overtimes, an expansion team winning their opener, a rematch of the AFC champsionship game, and plenty of scoring, the ranks are all shook up. Last week's ranking in ()'s.

(3) Oakland (1-0) They displayed a solid offense and a punishing defense during 31-17 win over Seattle. Only issue was inability to lay the hammer down. We’ll find out how good they are this week in Pittsburgh.

(6) Miami (1-0) Thoroughly dominated hapless Lions 49-21 and Ricky Williams had a solid debut.

(7) Green Bay (1-0) I’m not overly concerned about the showing against Atlanta because they won the game and put up a lot of points. Their defense will correct itself.

(2) St. Louis (0-1) Their weakness is natural surface, and with 5 more such contests on the schedule they better find a way around it or they will be traveling to the frozen tundra of Lambeau in January.

(10) New England (1-0) Proved their AFC title game was no fluke, but they benefited by plenty of Steelers’ mistakes and a bad call that cost Pittsburgh a touchdown.

(1) Pittsburgh (0-1) After losing their playoff rematch, now they get the team that many believe should have come to Heinz Field for a shot at the Super Bowl.

(8) San Francisco (1-0) Clearly they aren’t hitting on all cylinders offensively, but their defense looks solid and with Garcia, Owens, Hearst and Barlow it’s hard to worry about the offense.

(9) Tennessee (1-0) Now everyone knows why they were in my preseason top 10 after knocking off a final 4 team from 2001. The biggest concern is how they will deal with losing Jevon Kearse for half of the season.

(4) Philadelphia (0-1) They had the Titans on the ropes and couldn’t close the deal, mostly because they don’t have a workhorse feature back. My guess is that they will give either rookie Westbrook or veteran Levens a shot at being that guy very soon.

(13) Denver (1-0) Just when you count them out, they come up with a win over the defending NFC champs. Like I’ve said, however, they can beat or lose to any team in the NFL so we’ll see if they can develop some consistency.

(5) Tampa Bay (0-1) It’s not time to press the panic button yet, but the Saints are not a great team and they had them at home. The offense put up 333 yards, but the defense let up 368. Ouch.

(11) Indianapolis (1-0) A decent road win, but let’s keep it in perspective because Jacksonville is not a good team and they only won 28-25. Edge is healthy, however, and Qadry is looking like a solid addition to the offense.

(12) Chicago (1-0) Having to fight off Minnesota is not how they wanted to start the season. Anthony Thomas had just 45 yards, and is trying to fight off the sophomore slump. That 2 ½ hour drive to Champaign for home games looks like it will hurt them.

(14) NY Jets (1-0) They were basically outplayed during their 37-31 OT win over Buffalo, but Chad Morton’s kickoff returns gave them the win. Losing Curtis Martin would definitely hurt their prospects, and the defense was abused.

(15) Washington (1-0) Steve Spurrier notched a win in his opener, again, and the offense even put up 30 points. Then again, it was Arizona on the other side of the field, so let’s wait until Monday night’s match-up with Philly to assess where this team stands.

(16) New Orleans (1-0) The biggest plus is that the offense looked very good in piling up 368 yards and getting big days out of new feature back McAllister and rookie wide receiver Stallworth. Too often openers are deceiving, however, and I’m cautiously optimistic about their prospects in a soft division.

(26) Atlanta (0-1) This is what happens when the 9 teams ranked ahead of you lose. Even in defeat they showed a ton of grit and Michael Vick is looking very, very good right now.

(25) San Diego (1-0) They laid a whooping on Cincinnati, but Drew Brees is going to have some growing pains and they still have a weak set of wide receivers.

(27) Kansas City (1-0) I’m really only setting them up to fall, but they did go into Cleveland and put up 40 points even if they won on a fluke. Offense is all they’ve got, and they might need to score 30 every week to have a shot at the playoffs.

(23) Buffalo (0-1) Mental breakdowns led to their defeat, but they had a great day offensively led by Bledsoe’s debut and RB Travis Henry’s breakout day.

(21) NY Giants (0-1) They showed a lot of toughness in sticking with the 49ers, and when Kerry Collins stops throwing interceptions they will be a team to be reckoned with.

(22) Minnesota (0-1) Until they stop doing just enough to lose, this team is going nowhere fast. I don’t care how many times they throw to Randy Moss.

(20) Cleveland (0-1) I shouldn’t drop them this low, but their defense played an awful game and Dwayne Rudd should be fined his game check for costing them the game with his helmet toss. They have a lot of talent, but need to limit mistakes to succeed.

(18) Seattle (0-1) Absolutely awful in losing at Oakland, but I expect much more from them when Dilfer returns which is any week now.

(19) Cincinnati (0-1) A major disappointment, but I do believe they will put things back together and surprise a lot of teams.

(32) Houston (1-0) With much reluctance I rank them even this high, and I can almost guarantee that will not score even 10 points, much less win, this week in San Diego.

(17) Dallas (0-1) They got a wake up call after everyone hyped them up as playoff contenders. Apparently losing Rocket Ismail hurt, but there is no excuse for losing to an expansion team. Quincy Carter needs to play better.

(31) Carolina (1-0) Rodney Peete won a game for the first time since the Roosevelt administration. Hey, when your starter has 17 games in the past 6 seasons, you’re in trouble. At least they have the losing streak off their back.

(29) Arizona (0-1) Not enough offense to keep up with their awful defense, and a rugged schedule to boot.

(28) Jacksonville (0-1) Make no mistake, their close showing against Indy will wind up being one of the high points of their season.

(24) Baltimore (0-1) Apparently they are as bad as most feared after falling to Carolina and snapping the Panthers’ 15 game losing streak.

(30) Detroit (0-1) They were shelled in Miami, and have already begun the quarterback shuffle. On the upside that new stadium sure looks nice.
