NFL Power Rankings 10/1/02

With a slew of highly rated teams losing (5 of my top 10 teams) I’m evaluating my rankings from scratch.

(1) Oakland (3-0) In a weekend where 5 unbeaten teams lost, I guess you could say they answered my call and flexed their muscles with a 52-25 thrashing of Tennessee.

(6) Philadelphia (3-1) Nothing to gain by beating Houston, and it wasn’t as convincing as it should have been, but right now they are tops in the NFC.

(3) New England (3-1) Losing for the first time in forever is probably a good thing because they were getting *censored*y, but with other teams also losing, they hold their position.

(2) Miami (3-1) How does a defense that allowed 37 in three games give up 48? A second 400+ yards allowed effort raises a red flag.

(4) Denver (3-1) I believe what we saw this past Monday night was a fluke, and they will have a chance to prove it this week against the Chargers.

(5) New Orleans (3-1) Another 352 yards allowed is really a bad sign, especially in a game facing a rookie quarterback.

(7) Tampa Bay (3-1) Everyone scores 30 on the Bengals, so I’m not impressed that they pounded a bad team and won’t put them over a Saints team they have lost to.

(8) San Francisco (2-1) They got the week off to prepare for a chance to absolutely bury the Rams.

(10) Green Bay (3-1) The phrase “winning ugly” sure comes to mind. Sooner or later they need to lay down the hammer.

(13) San Diego (4-0) Well so much for the reality check, but they did give up 440 yards to a team playing without their best offensive player.

(18) Buffalo (2-2) Another OT game, another high scoring win. They may not go to the playoffs, but they’re exciting to watch. This might be high, but there are lots of mediocre teams.

(9) Chicago (2-2) To be a winning team, you have to put up over 188 yards of offense. Right now, their passing game needs help.

(12) Pittsburgh (1-2) Ding-dong Kordell Stewart. This is your wake up call. To say their win over Cleveland was huge would be an understatement.

(14) Indianapolis (2-1) First a bye week, now the Bengals. Things are looking up.

(20) Carolina (3-1) Another week, another kicker down the drain, but they showed they can play with a solid team.

(16) Cleveland (2-2) Critical loss puts them right back into the pack. Are they the only team that can’t throw on the Steelers?

(25) Kansas City (2-2) Well they gave up another 30 and got it done, so what the heck do I know. Getting Gonzo in the mix sure helped.

(21) Atlanta (1-2) They come off a bye with a chance to make a race of the division with a win over Tampa Bay.

(24) Arizona (2-2) Pesky Cardinals round up another win, and yet another back is making starter Thomas Jones look bad.

(15) NY Giants (2-2) With a chance to stay atop the East, they fell flat in Arizona.

(23) Jacksonville (2-1) Jets are making a lot of teams look good, but over 200 yards rushing from your backfield tandem is good regardless of the opposition.

(26) Dallas (2-2) That’d be two wins for the defense for those of you still counting along at home.

(11) St. Louis (0-4) Are we in the Twilight Zone? I actually think they have a better chance with Martin at the helm, and should benefit from getting receivers Wilkins and Edwards into the mix.

(17) Tennessee (1-3) Since the second half of the opener, they have been flat out awful.

(28) Seattle (1-3) Shaun Alexander got going, but will it be too late for this team to seriously contend for a playoff berth?

(29) Baltimore (0-2) Five weeks off couldn’t give them the edge over the visiting Broncos.

(21) Washington (1-2) They took a week off to prepare for a team struggling more than they are - Tennessee.

(30) Detroit (1-3) They showed some life in opening Ford Field. Now they’ll probably go back to sleep.

(22) NY Jets (1-3) Uh, outscored 102-13 in three weeks?. Think it’s time to give Pennington a whirl?

(27) Minnesota (0-4) Last week I said the bottom 6 was tough to distinguish, but they sure made it easier by getting crushed in Seattle.

(31) Cincinnati (0-4) Can’t score, can’t stop anyone. Any other questions about how bad this team is?

(32) Houston (1-3) Hey they put up a 17 spot, and it only took them three weeks.

Raiders look like real deal
Authored by: Pete.Martin on Tuesday, October 01 2002

I agree with your number 1 ranking for the Raiders at this point in the season. At the end of last season, I had resigned myself to watching this team wither away in old age, as I had concluded that that was what was slowing them down and allowing them to lose to the likes of Seattle and Tennessee. I\'m sure Mr. Gruden probably felt the same way. But there have been some changes on the Silver and Black roster, haven\'t there? Out with Biekert and Wiesnewski. In with Rod Woodson and Romanowski. Other than Charles Woodson and Tory James, the whole defense is new. A bold move in the offseason, but obviously a good one. Now we have Rod Woodson and Charles Woodson in the backfield. On the same defense! Good Lord. This is starting to look like a mini dream team. And they haven\'t even been playing together all that long. Just wait until they get into sych. Will any opposing team dare to throw a pass? History has shown us that this team does very well with two like-sounding athletes covering receivers. Remember Haynes and Hayes back in \'83? Well, now it\'s Woodson and Woodson. When you couple this sterling defensive unit with an offensive unit that has obviously still got it, then you have to wonder what will stop them. I must admit that I never expected these \"old fogies\" to be able to put up 52 points, and I still believe that their window of opportunity is shrinking really fast, but it\'s starting to look like the window just might stay open this whole season long, straight to the Lombardi trophy. Much to the chagrin of Gruden and all the rule makers who constantly plot to come up with regulations to thwart this team (can you believe that they are still calling this incomplete pass rule that caused the Raiders to lose to the Pats in the playoffs last year? Well, why not, the holy fumble and stickum are still outlawed.......)
