Roll Over, E.B. White
E.B. White was a terrific writer. In Elements of Style, he advised writers to use adjectives and adverbs sparingly. Last night, while reading the second story in Carson McCullers' collected short stories, I observed two things: 1) She breaks this rule. And 2) She writes beautifully and concisely. I wonder if this is a case of "this rule helps ensure good writing, but isn't necessary in the hands of an artist."
Regardless, I recommend the book of short stories. Carson McCullers was a wonderful writer, and an amazing observer of human behavior.
