NFL Power Rankings 12/3/02

Most of my top 10 remains the same, and the Bucs remain on top even though they lost.

(1) Tampa Bay (9-3) Shame on you if you have forgotten so quickly that they have wins over both the Packers and Falcons, the latter of which they meet again this week. If they lose again, I drop them but not until.

(2) Green Bay (9-3) It wasn’t pretty, but they turned on the jets when they needed to and delivered a division clinching victory.

(3) Atlanta (8-3-1) They were staggered, but how much more can you say about Vick? This isn’t college, quarterbacks don’t just run for 173 yards in the NFL.

(4) Oakland (8-4) Another four game winning streak has them tied for the division lead, but they close with 4 teams that have an average record of 7-5.

(5) Philadelphia (9-3) I’m starting to think third string quarterbacks might be the way to go. Paging Mike Quinn, would the Texans be better off with him starting?

(6) New Orleans (8-4) I don’t care how good the team you are playing is, if you are a playoff caliber team you should win at home. No need to get carried away boosting them after that.

(7) Pittsburgh (7-4-1) I think they found their kicker after Reed put six field goals through the fork in one game. That’s half of Todd Peterson’s production in 10 games.

(9) San Francisco (8-4) Another uneasy win over Seattle, but the Rams losing they can now focus in on improving their playoff position. Right now they are the lowest rated division leader, which means a trip to Philly or Green Bay could be forthcoming.

(10) Indianapolis (8-4) They smoked Houston twice, which is something no NFL team will be able to say.

(13) San Diego (8-4) Just when you think they are slumping, they score 30 points with guys like Eric Parker, Reche Caldwell and Tim Dwight at wide receiver. How can a defense like Denver’s let that happen?

(11) Denver (7-5) Maybe now that they are almost back to .500 Tom Jackson will finally stop rating them in his top 3 for his joke of a power poll.

(14) New England (7-5) I just get the feeling they are going to get on a roll at any moment, and they might already be on one right now.

(20) Buffalo (6-6) Are they back? I think they are because I saw something magical in them when they went on a 35-7 run after being down 14-3.

(8) Miami (7-5) On the bright side, Fiedler is back under center, but now it is back to a four team race in the AFC East.

(15) NY Jets (6-6) They hung tough with the Raiders on the road so I see no reason to drop them.

(12) St. Louis (5-7) It just hasn’t been their season, and every break has seemingly gone the other way. Losing a pair of NFL MVPs along the way sure hasn’t helped.

(17) Baltimore (6-6) Another ugly win over Cincy and now they are one game back of the second wild card. I thought they were out of the race? Oh right, that was just Billick’s motivational tool.

(18) Tennessee (7-5) Huge comeback win on the road, and they continue to be one of the more bewildering teams in the NFL.

(22) Kansas City (6-6) It would be hard for them to get into the division hunt, but their 49-0 waxing of Arizona shows they still consider themselves in the wild card race.

(24) Dallas (5-7) Ten in a row over Washington, and even if they are out of the playoff race at least they haven’t cashed in like some other teams.

(16) Cleveland (6-6) Dee Morgan ran on them like he was Earl Campbell, and even a completely demoralized Panthers team had enough to beat them.

(19) Washington (5-7) This is Spurrier’s year of adjustment. No one is going to be laughing at him next year.

(23) NY Giants (6-6) The glee over McNabb going down has faded, and the Giants are hoping for a miracle at this point.

(21) Seattle (4-8) How close are they to contending? If they had beaten San Francisco twice (both 7 point losses) they’d be leading the NFC West.

(25) Jacksonville (5-7) They rallied, but you can’t let a team score seven times against you and expect to win, even if only one score was a touchdown.

(32) Carolina (4-8) This defense should get a medal, because along with Dallas they carry their team to any win they get.

(27) Minnesota (3-9) They showed a lot of grit taking Atlanta to overtime, but if you don’t finish the deal you don’t move up the ranks.

(26) Arizona (4-8) It is pretty obvious that this team has given up, which is really too bad because McGinnis is one of the good guys in the coaching ranks.

(28) Chicago (3-9) The only thing I can say that is positive would be the courage of Jim Miller playing hurt.

(29) Houston (3-9) Even though they lost to Cincinnati big, three wins have to count for something, and I’m rating them above a team with a brain dead coach.

(30) Detroit (3-9) They couldn’t even make the game entertaining on Thanksgiving, and it is probably time for the NFL to give another team a shot at hosting the holiday bowl.

(31) Cincinnati (1-11) Dillon mysteriously wasn’t on the field during their final play. It’s no mystery to me, the guy didn’t want to fall an inch short of the goal line again.
