Ten years ago, I would have really loved this article. As recently as three or four years ago, I might have (had the patience) to actually understand it. Anyone wanna give me the simplified version?

Since it was published 55 years ago and is considered the most important paper on encoding information for transmission, there are probably some good summaries out there but in short it provides theoritical limits on the amount of information that can be transmitted in different circumstances using various encoding methods -- basis for all research on QAM, VSB, and other modulation schemes used today in Cable Modems, HDTV, cable television, etc.
