What was the point of freedom of press, again?

PoliticI thought the First Amendment was established primarily to enable folks to criticize the current government. Apparently, though, VP Cheney thinks his political career shouldn't implicitly expose his wife to political satire. I had planned to link to the original pages at whitehouse.org, but they're taken down. It seems that Ashcroft would be happy to do away with the "establishment" clause which led to our current understanding of church and state. I wonder if we can just do away with the whole 1st amendment, as far as this White House is concerned.

Cheney has claimed his conflicts-of-interest could be kept secret because he is so important he couldn't possibly be a corrupt, evil man, selling our environment and security in exchange for filling his cronies's coffers. The judge disagrees:

"There's not one single case anywhere that supports what you're after," Judge Harry T. Edwards told the administration lawyer. "You have no case" for immediate review, he said.
