March Madness 2003 is coming to a TV near you
Thank God we'll have something to watch other than Iraq crap. Here's my little tourney rant. I'm not a huge college hoops fan other than tourney time. The teams I "adopt" are Cal and Oklahoma. Both suffered losses last night that hurt their ultimate NCAA seedings by taking 3rd in their respective conferences, but both can get a boost from their conference tourneys this coming week.
My take is that Arizona & Kentucky are far and away the best two teams and locked into #1 seeds regardless. Florida & Oklahoma lost momentum by falling in huge games, while Texas (who beat Oklahoma in Norman) has to be a #1 seed front runner. Kansas I believe will lose at Missouri today, and regardless they will not win the Big XII tourney. I think Oklahoma will take it yet again.
After that, you get Pittsburgh who will rise possibly to #4 in the next AP poll with a gaudy 22-4 record. If they roll through the Big East tourney, they get a #1 seed without question. Wake Forest might need a decent ACC tourney showing to grab a #1 seed, but winning the ACC is huge. Marquette has take Louisville's spot by dominating Conference USA and no one remembers them getting clobbered by Notre Dame 92-71. They are primed for a #2 seeding and second round NCAA exit. Duke has had their chances, and seems to be laying in wait. They have nothing to prove until the NCAAs. Xavier's biggest game might have been a 1 point loss at Stanford because clocking A-10 competition doesn't impress me.
Those teams are 1-11 in the AP poll, and will all be in the top 10 in the new poll. You can look at bracket projections if you're bored, but those were my snipits on a few of the top clubs. It is hard to argue that Arizona, Kentucky, and Pittsburgh will get #1 seeds based on what games are in front of them and their current status. Texas is first in line for the other one, but if OU wins the Big XII tourney title by taking down both Texas & Kansas they could steal it, and Wake Forest should take the #1 from Pittsburgh if they can get the ACC tourney crown, a big "if". Once the conference tourneys are over I'll throw some more opinion out there.
Which team are you rooting for?
