Coalition of the Willing

Politic30 countries are on the official list supporting the war, my initial thought was aren't half of these countries with people who want to be liberated either from a corrupt "democracy", are currently killing ethnic groups, at war with neighbors, etc? Most of the rest just got rid of a dictatorship. But then what struck me was how many were similar to '91 coalition except for the replacement of Arab nations with former Soviet states. Except for the French and the Germans we have a fairly consistent set of friends in the world's ~267 currently recognized countries. Also only 3 countries on the current U.N. security council, only 3 countries of the world's 15 most populous (U.S., Japan, and Philippines), and 14 of the top 50 most populous countries of the world are part of the coalition.

2003 - 31 nations: Afghanistan, Albania, Australia, Azerbaijan, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Eritrea, Estonia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Japan, South Korea , Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, Uzbekistan. U.S. State Department says 15 other unidentified countries also have pledged support.

1991 - 34 nations: Afghanistan, Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Britain, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Honduras, Italy, Kuwait, Morocco, Netherlands, Niger, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, South Korea, Spain, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United States.

The latest "Get Your War On" comic has this gem: "The Coalition of the Willing is about to rock! Thanks, Uzbekistan! Thanks, Macedonia! You guys are the best!" I'm not sure why he left out Eritrea, whose mode of support is questionable: they can't provide money or troops...what can they provide?

Bush\'s war budget is out an it includes:

\"Israel would receive $1 billion for military costs and $9 billion in loan guarantees. Egypt would get $2 billion in loan guarantees and $300 million in economic grants. Jordan would receive more than $1 billion in economic aid. Others to receive aid include Pakistan, Afghanistan, Colombia and the Philippines. The officials did not detail amounts. Turkey would receive $1 billion.\"

Its interesting that Jordan, Egypt, and Israel all need more aid since Jordan and Egypt aren\'t even part of the coalition and Israel so far hasn\'t been hit, but then again I believe all three countries receive aid on an annual basis and will need more to recover from the economic impact of war in the region. Also interesting is that Turkey gets money despite so far being pretty hostile to our efforts.

Lest you think the anti-war protests in Pakistan are about pacifism, this student pulls out Occam's razor. No, no, no...they're all for war and death, just not against Saddam, who they think is swell.

The Solomon Islands denies being a part of the Coalition of the Willing.

Ah, well. At least we still have Palau, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, and the notoriously humanitarian Rwanda and Uganda.

India condemns the Iraq war. No matter if they support RoveCheneyFeld and their dancing monkew W or not, I will continue to enjoy Dahi Vada ("Freedom Vada"?)
