Tools influence design

Other StuffDesign expert Edwart Tufte rails against PowerPoint and other slide-driven presentation software. The fact is, the tools you use imact the way you think about things. And PowerPoint constrains thinking, he suggests. I can tell you that at my company, people think things are better if they're on a PowerPoint slide. I mean, you could write an essay and (I swear) copy-n-paste it onto slides, and it would suddenly be taken seriously. Pathetic.

I mean, he's really on (power)point. PowerPoint turns all communication into a dumbed-down sales pitch, with limited information influence over design.

Then again if you believe Dilbert by the time a presentation makes it to the CEO it has to fit on a tie. It doesn't matter what presentation tool you use if you can only use 8 words to get your point across. So is Microsoft not MTV or Reagan behind the dumbing down of America (i.e. the rise of the fast cut/short attention spans and the soundbite respectively) or is Microsoft just enabling the soundbite to taken an even stronger hold on our culture?
