Other StuffAs I read this story about a high school "Day of Purity", it occurs to me how absolutely messed up our (official, as well as de facto) sex education is. Click "read more" to see my list of gripes or observations.
  • By equating abstinence with purity, the right-wing pleasure-haters are teaching that sex is dirty, sex is bad, and sex is immoral.
  • The "pornographers" who advocate the "other side" of this equate the mechanics of sex with the whole sexual experience. This is just as bad. I mean, if it were all about the mechanical aspects, folks would just masturbate, right? Well, perhaps the occasional oral sex....
  • If sex is only for procreation (not pleasure) as the "purity" dorks suggest, why isn't a breast only for its utilitarian purpose? That is, why isn't it merely a baby-feeding device? Why is it sexual for Janet to bare her boob?
  • I think kids have sex way too early. Too early=before their emotional development is up to the task. But I don't think it makes sense to scare kids away from sex because you want them to hold off until they're more mature.
I think there was a lot more I wanted to rant about on this subject, but I've got work to do.

Let's not be hasty. Some of the purely best sex is dirty, bad and immoral. Ha!

I'm perplexed that most U.S. adults sanguinely accept children’s exposure to innumerable portrayals of graphic, gratuitous violence. Adding to that mystery is the fact that many of the same adults balk at children’s exposure to any portrayals of graphic, gratuitous sex. Finally, many of these adults attempt to keep teens from being exposed to representations of committed-relationship lovemaking, and education-oriented sexual information. I consider this final element to constitute a crime against humanity and an instance of child abuse.

I wonder how average age of first marriage and first sexual experience have changed globally in the last 150 years. In the U.S. the trend has been towards slightly earlier sex (probably closer to global averages) and later marriage (farther away from global averages) in the last 150 years. Of course perceptions of Victorian culture cloud our view of the reality of the U.S. 150 years ago so I may be wrong. Meanwhile studies show U.S. children are reaching sexual maturity earlier than ever before (maybe better diet, maybe effects of drugs/platics/pesticides in the water supply that mimic sex hormones).

In our post-industrial world where people live longer and have a lot more to learn to become productive members of society. You could argue that there is no need to rush into reproductive roles (which distract greatly from other pursuits) so young adults can focus on figuring out other ways they can bring greater benefit to society. My experience is that a lot of young adults instead spend a lot of time/effort on pseudo-courting each other so maybe early marriage wasn\'t such a bad concept after all.

It is sexual for Janet to bare her boob because our society says it is. Cultures where women are topless don\'t consider the breast to be immensly sexual, at least no more than the face, neck, or legs. Back in Victorian days, legs and ankles were considered sexual because women always covered them up with long skirts. These days, bare legs are considered no big deal.

If the \"purity dorks\" really want to cut down on sexual thoughts, they ought to promote nudism. But I suspect they\'re much happier in suppressing sexual thoughts rather than reducing them.
