William Hung appears but Jasmine Trias & John Stevens advance to American Idol finals - Wild Card contestants revealed
Sorry William Hung, your appearance on Monday night was not your own personal wild card show. Given his burst of fame, the dude might have gotten voted in if it had been. Instead, girl power is still in effect as a sixth female performer joined the final 12 although a second male also advanced. Jasmine Trias and John Stevens are all of 33 years old, combined that is, but that's the sort of upside that this show is looking for. John Stevens performed "She's Always a Woman" and sounded like Frank Sinatra doing Billy Joel. Hilarious, but still pretty good and he earned 28% of the vote. Jasmine Trias did Whitney's "Run to you" and certainly sounds older than she looks. Overall this group was not as bad as group 2 but not good either. Suzy Vulaca opened with a terrible sounding "Unbreak my heart". John Preator butchered "What love is all about" beyond recognition and Heather Piccinini did the same to "New attitude". Lisa Wilson looks a bit like Eliza Dushku, so she has that going for her but her "Come to my window" left me trying to climb out of mine to get away. George Huff I thought was awful singing "Always and forever" but the judges liked him and he did finish third in voting. The Wild Card works like this. Out of the 24 ousted from the first four groups, 12 will be asked back to audition for the judges privately. Out of that bunch, 8 will come on stage for another shot. One will be voted America's favorite, as last year's winner, err runner-up Clay Aiken was and advance. The other 7 will have to hope that one of the judges picks them to move on.
From this bunch, Suzy Vulaca, George Huff and Tiara Purifoy will be represented. It shouldn't surprise anyone that group 2 will have just one person, Lisa Leuschner, who is a bit of a feel good story because she auditioned last year as well and was in the midst of the "lose some weight" controversy stirred up by Simon.
Group 2 will send Elizabeth Letendre, Eric Yoder, Jon Peter Lewis and Leah Labelle. I wasn't impressed by any of them the first time around but whatever.
Group 1 is represented by Jennifer Hudson, Katie Webber, Marque Lynche and Matthew Metzger.
Since I don't think any of this group are great singers, I'll handicap their odds based on star power. I think they really want Katie Webber and Matthew Metzger in the finals just based on looks. George Huff is going to be Randy Jackson's pick, period. Probably Jennifer Hudson will be the final entrant although don't count out Lisa Leuschner, Elizabeth LeTendre or Eric Yoder. Eric might get in just to level up the number of guys and gals.
Subtlety is not one of my strengths
