Christie Woods and Colin Guinn nosed out by Chip and Kim McAllister who win Amazing Race 5

EntertainmentWay back when this thing started (read more for details) I picked Colin Guinn and Christie Woods to take AR5. They just struck me as a pair of bulldogs from Texas. They were twice on the ropes in the legs leading up to the finale, first escaping on a non-elimination leg as 3 of the final 4 teams in the competition had. Then, much more dramatically they roared from behind on a road block when Colin scaled a mountain in no time flat, catching and passing Karen Heins who formed half of the bowling mom team with Linda Ruiz. That put them into the finals.

Once there it was a delayed fight that did in their team and the dating models, Brandon Davidson and Nicole O'Brian who was a former Miss Texas. The 17 minute lead was enough to carry Chip and Kim, who seemed pretty quick in the only remaining task, a lifesize maze, to victory. They were the only team in the race never to finish last and won 4 legs overall including the most important one - the last.

Colin and Christie started slow, finishing the first two legs in 7th and 6th, but then reeled off wins in 6 of 8 legs including 3 in a row until Chip and Kim "yielded" them, forcing a 4th place finish and save by the non-elimination leg. Brandon and Nicole won 2 legs, but after taking 6th in the opening leg never finished lower than fifth. The ill-fated team of former Big Brother 4 runner-up Alison Irwin and her then boyfriend Donny were the only other team to win a leg. Now for how we got here.... Sorry, dbsmall and norcalfella will not be appearing in Amazing Race 5, or 6 for that matter. These folks will be racing around the world trying to win a million bucks.

I am betting on Colin and Christie to win it all, with Dennis and Erika close behind. Kami and Karli should also do well. On the surface Big Brother 4's Alison and boyfriend Donny seem to be solid contenders but I'm counting on Alison to melt down. With 4 young couples in this year's bunch I think it is obvious what they're looking for to save this show's somewhat fledgling ratings.

Host Phil Keoghan says it is the most cutthroat season yet. We'll find out later this week ...

Amazing Race 5 kicks off

Moments after the start of the race things got interesting, and it almost led to the elimination of a team before the leg really began. Jim, a helicopter pilot and military man teamed with his daughter Marsha, tumbled on the dock while running for the first clue. He suffered a gash in his knee that required 25 stitches and almost caused them to miss their flight. They made it just in time, and were the last safe team to arrive in the end, finishing in 10th place.

Chip and Kim, a husband and wife team, suffered similar misfortune when they missed a clue box. After finishing the task and not realizing their mistake, they went to the end and were the first to arrive. Phil then gave them the bad news that they would have to go back and recover the clue before they could finish, a move that dropped them to 8th but kept them alive. Kami and Karli the twins made the same mistake and wound up in 9th.

Other teams had early troubles at the airport as some teams took earlier flights with longer layovers that would ultimately leave them at their destination later. Others blew a chance to wind up on an earlier boat, while the biggest mistake was probably a team walking right by a clue box and wasting over half an hour.

When all was said and done, it was Dennis and Erika the once engaged couple who bit the dust. At one point Dennis let another team take an available taxi that might have cost them the race.

The leaders are Big Brother 4's Alison Irwin and boyfriend Donny, which isn't much of a surprise given how she orders him around. Brothers Marshall and Lance somehow lumbered into second place, while bowling moms Linda and Karen snuck into third and Bob and Joyce (50+ widowers who are internet dating) finished in fourth, all of them ahead of several more physically fit teams. Heck, even little person Mirna and her cousin Charla wound up in fifth.

Naturally, this means little other than Dennis and Erika are gone and Alison and Donny get to take a trip after the show. There is a new twist this season, however, as teams will be able to use a "Yield" once during the course of the race to slow a team behind them down. That could be a pivotal factor to avoid elimination in a future leg.

that's my take

A bit Texas-heavy roster. And nobody from the SF area---surely dbsmall and norcalfella were first choice from the area.

Allison and Donnie will be gone either next week or the week after because of a *censored*up by Donnie and it ultimately ends with them breaking up for real. Oh happy days!!!
