Oh, wow, I'm illiterate
Authored by: futurenow on Monday, July 26 2004

I haven't read 99.9999+% of the books in the library of congress but that doesn't make me illiterate. This list is of books of mainly of a certain style, is it a style that defines literacy -- I don't believe so. If it does, I would be less literate than you although a number of these books made into good movies that I have seen.

Of course creating lists of important books that define literacy is very hard because a list of "great" books usually says a lot about your societal system, cultural background, etc. Also one has to consider is the list about "good" writing, exploring the limits of the craft of writing, entertainment value, thought provoking, moving, culture defining, educational, etc -- also highly subjective.

Personally I'm glad I don't have to pick the books for the college intro to lit classes.
