Alonzo Bodden wins Last Comic Standing 3, finale aired on Comedy Central
With all the drama of voting for Ronald Reagan while living in Hawaii, Alonzo Bodden was officially named the Last Comic Standing winner in the battle of the seasons. I guess NBC really couldn't spare that half hour of air time, could they? Truly, Alonzo was a deserving winner. He really wanted this and he performed well enough to get it. In fact, he beat out the savvy Dave Mordal (2nd place) who has taken the comedy circuit by storm and earns 10 grand a week reportedly. He also took out season 2 champ John Heffron (3rd place) because I think people got tired of voting for him. Rich Vos (4th place) was also a formidable foe, and has been at this for 20 years. He was featured in a half hour show on Comedy Central, performing a long set which repeated a few jokes from his LCS stint this season. I think he is pretty funny, but for this show to be successful a guy like him needs to be the 9th or 10th funniest in a given season, not second or third.
Expect a wide search for comics willing to do this show, because I know there are funny ones out there who simply make too much money to care, and a return next summer. They simply can't compete in the fall, it's painfully obvious. I don't call this "battle of the best" as NBC does. You see "best" by definition does not include "worst" which explains why were are subjected to more of Tere Joyce and Jay London. Perhaps they have "best" confused with "all" because we are getting 19 of the 20 comics from the first two seasons. Bonnie McFarlane unfortunately decided not to return which is a shame because she was at the very least the best looking female from either show. She was replaced by the ugliest girl, Jessica Kirson.
In the opener, each team decides which 5 comics to challenge straight up. LCS1 wound up with a lot of their heavy hitters including runner-up Ralphie May and Dave Mordal who is reportedly drawing $10,000 a week performing stand-up plus his good buddy Rich Vos. Then there was Tess Drake who isn't worth any words, and Cory Kahaney.
That looked like a good team, but LCS2 had their own top guns with two of their final three in the form of Alonzo Bodden and winner John Heffron performing along with Tammy Pescatelli and Todd Glass. Then there was sub Jessica Kirson and her funny faces.
Truly, night 1 gave us few highlights. Dave Mordal looked like a pro and John Heffron had some funny video game humor. Alonzo Bodden was a little sick with his Olympics material about gymnastics and Ralphie May didn't really perform after being struck with grief over his father's death. He simply told old, tired jokes that you can read on any internet spam. The rest of the bunch was just plain bad.
When the votes were read, I wasn't surprised at all to see Cory and Jessica gone. So long, get lost, both of them were terrible. In a move that assured even those comics who actually make money would show up, they made the audience vote count for $50,000 to the team receiving the most total votes. It was LCS2 this time and probably will be again this week.
That's because night two featured a group of really weak comics from LCS1 surrounding champion Dat Phan, who was the only one worth talking about. He always comes up with at least a few new jokes. Tere Joyce, Rob Cantrell, Geoff Brown, and Sean Kent could have put the funniest bits from each of their sets and still not been good.
LCS2 countered with weak links Jay London and Corey Holcomb, but backed them up with heavy hitters Gary Gulman, Kathleen Madigan and the incomparable Ant. Every week Gary has something funny to say and will continue to prove he should have won his season.
This vote from home should boil down to Jay London and Tere Joyce waving goodbye, but given Jay's popularity with some folks at home I think Corey Holcomb could go. With 8 a side left the comics will have made it past the warmups.
Subtlety is not one of my strengths
