Nicole Forslund and Steve Shepley win The Complex Malibu, get only $317,250 for their trouble
I know what you're thinking over three hundred grand is a lot of money. If you understand the real estate market in California, however, you know that clearly Fox ripped the winners off. The show was basically a home makeover project turned reality showdown. A similar show aired on USA called House Wars if I'm not mistaken and contestants from that show (blonde triplets) are now featured on Fox's Renovate My Family, hosted by Dr. Phil's son. In this one, couples first work in two teams trying to renovate multiple rooms in a 4 unit complex. All teams vote for the couple they want to be evicted, and the team with the unit voted the worst is gone. Very poor concept from the start, especially since the project manager's vote doesn't count. Tell me how that makes sense again? There were no twists whatsoever, and eventually it boiled down to a final four assigned to using leftover money to renovate as much of the unit as possible in a tight time frame. Some of the remodeling was done pretty well, especially considering that these are not professionals in any sense of the word.
Lew Gallow and Brad Plumley, a gay couple, were clearly the most talented but were hunted down by the wicked evil old bats Barney and Rose just prior to the final four. Their work was wasted on Dave and Ana, who failed to finish their kitchen and paid for it in the public auction.
Speaking of the auction, the unit Nicole and Steve were in happened to sell for $300K over any other property, but there was a reason for it. Way back in 1969, the guy who bought it was an original renter of that unit. He met his wife there, and they also conceived their first child in that unit. I'm sure they would have still made the top amount, but probably by a slimmer margin.
All told it was $4,050,000 gross for the four units and do you really expect me to believe the net profit was just $317K? Dream on. They could pay realtors 6% each on the units, which would be completely pointless, and consider the renovation money of maybe $200K meaning half a million went poof and they STILL would have had more. Fox clearly screwed with the numbers because of poor ratings. Oh well, that's not a bad fee for a couple months of work. Hard to believe cheap ass CBS only pays $500K to the winner of Big Brother which hogs up 3 nights a week all summer long.
Pretty soon I think reality TV shows are going to have to start upping the ante to $2 million for the winners, and not For Love or Money annuities worth $400K either.
