It's not raining...your leg's being peed on

PoliticSenator Kerry has reportedly called President Bush to concede the election. Regardless of how stuff works out, President Bush decisively received a majority of the popular vote. I'm disappointed. Apparently, to get a president elected, you can:

  • Preside over a terrible economic catastrophe. (And no, ya can't blame a 2004 deficit on 9/11/2001.)
  • Lose every debate
  • Declare an "enemy #1" and then utterly fail to get him. (Special note to the Coulter-ites...if Dem's want Wham-bam-Saddam still in power, then apparently Rep's want Kim Jong Il still in power, since GWB hasn't attacked him.)
I think the key for the GOP is to:
  1. Declare they're Christian (regardless of whether they espouse Christian values or even go to church).
  2. Stoke fear (people apparently feel safer under a deserter than a war hero.)
I mean, it just doesn't matter if you've failed at all your previous ventures, including your first term in office...."be afraid, and I'm a Christian", combined with media control, will enable you to win.

I heard somewhere, last night, that 2nd terms are always mired by scandal. Scandal? Like what? Like Rumsfeld orchestrating Abu Ghraib and a poorly planned Iraq invasion, without losing his job? Like Cheney selling our asses off to energy companies (including Enron) and then refusing to make our energy task force meeting minutes public (remember folks, he works for us...)? Like granting no-bid contracts to Halliburton and Bechtel, encountering repeated overbilling and corruption, and not punishing them for it?

Now, I don't know about you, but I think it's time to start checking out this portfolio to figure out my investment direction...

The offer still stands...if you're a GWB supporter, send me what you like about him (if you want it posted, anonymously) or post a comment. One guy I know (who's a Stanford alum, so take it w/a grain of salt) says it's because GWB had a plan, which you migh like or dislike, but it was a plan of new ideas. This puzzles me (that people like a "new" idea, even if it's proven to be a failure....)

MSNBC editorial: Slightly more than half of the citizens of this country simply do not care about what those of us in the “reality-based community” say or believe about anything. They don’t care that Iraq is turning into murderous quicksand and a killing field for our children. They don’t care that the Bush presidency has made us less safe by creating more terrorists, inspiring more anti-American hatred and refusing to engage in the hard work that would be necessary to make a meaningful dent in our myriad vulnerabilities at home. They don’t care that he has mortgaged our children’s future to give trillions to the wealthiest among us. They don’t care that the economy continues to hemorrhage well-paying jobs and replace them with Wal-Mart; that the number without health insurance is over forty million and rising. They don’t care that Medicare premiums are rising to fund the coffers of pharmaceutical companies. They don’t care that the air they breathe and the water they drink is being slowly poisoned and though they call themselves conservatives, they even don’t care that the size of the government and its share of our national income has increased by roughly a quarter in just four years. This is not a world of rational debate and issue preference.
The people have spoken. The people are stupid.

Senator-elect Jim DeMint: Thinks that unwed pregnant women and gays are unfit to be schoolteachers.
Senator-elect Tom Coburn: Wants the death penalty for abortion doctors.
Senator-elect John Thune: Mr. School Prayer Amendment.
Voters in 11 states voted to ban same-sex marriage. The lowest margin was 57%-43%. The highest (Mississippi) was 86%-14%. Kentucky's also bans civil unions. That one was 75%-25%.
The Senate will likely be split 55-45 in favor of Republicans, creeping closer to a filibuster-proof supermajority. Meanwhile, 89% of these guys (SC Justices) are older than 65.
Enjoy your tax cut, America. You're going to need it.
Come on, laugh a little

I'd like to say I'm staggered by the results - but frankly I'm not.

Disappointed, frightened, and a little sick, but not staggered.

I do wonder about this country's values.

This should have been Kerry's concession speech:
"We in blue states produce the vast majority of the wealth in this country and pay the most taxes, and you in the red states receive the majority of the money from those taxes while complaining about 'em. We in the blue states are the only ones who've been attacked by foreign terrorists, yet you in the red states are gung ho to fight a war in our name. We in the blue states produce the entertainment that you consume so greedily each day, while you in the red states show open disdain for us and our values. Blue state civilians are the actual victims and targets of the war on terror, while red state civilians are the ones standing behind us and yelling "Oh, yeah!? Bring it on!""

Atrios says we ought to reframe Bush's behavior/leadership post-9/11 (Yeah, I know I"m supposed to be posting conservitive stories...and I will. But I will also be posting lib comments.)
