NFL Mock Draft 2005 (seven rounds including compensatory picks) updated 4/22/05 FINAL

SportIf you are coming here hoping for my 2006 version, time is not really on my side. I do have good news though because some recent work is available from me on a FOX blog that can be found here where I talk about an NFL draft lottery and the definition of an NFL QB (Leinart vs. Young).

Special note to the jackasses at nflfans.com/draft/forum who don't know football from foosball. My draft was one of the most accurate on the internet and has been praised from everyone who has good sense. The version you posted was an early one but if you're too stupid Heftybag87 (are you really that fat?) NoName, Gex409 (Swancutt won't last until the 4th huh? He lasted until the 6th moron & Minnesota DIDN'T take a safety after all did they?) Phred (49ers will take a CB on day one you say?) aaugusti (no idea what you're even talking about) so you've been proven to be imbeciles. Have a look at my new Mock Draft which runs three rounds with no projected trades.

Check back during the season where I will make weekly picks for all the NFL games and provide deep FFL cheat sheets.

Many thanks to Huddlegeeks ContractBud.com Mock Draft Heaven HailRedskins TheFootballExpert fftoolbox and oaklandraidernews for including us in their list of links so that this mock gets exposure.

I have compiled information from 70+ mock drafts (most over one round) 10 value boards and 30 rankings by position from various sources. Some of the players might go higher or lower, but I'm trying to address what position a team will be going for more than an individual.

Comments are welcome and appreciated. If you prefer, email comments to me at norcalfella@small.to. Any site wishing to link to us, feel free to do so.

MY PROJECTED TRADES:

Dallas sends their #11 overall pick (1250) to Kansas City for their #15 (1050) #116 (62) and #147 (33).

Philadelphia sends their #63 and #132 overall pick to Buffalo for Travis Henry.

Jacksonville sends their #87 overall pick to Washington for Rod Gardner: There are better #2 receivers out there, but he’s a solid player who can fill the void as Smith ages and Williams develops.

NFL Draft 2005: first look grades
Authored by: norcalfella on Wednesday, April 27 2005
Not final, but a quick thought or two.

ARIZONA: JJ is a star, Rolle fills their need immediately whereas they didn't want to put Warner in the spot he was last year with Eli. Green gives them a live body at CB, Blacktock was a great value at LB, Brown is a near steal at OG so for those picks in the top 111 we're talking about guys who could have all been gone in the first 2 rounds. Not sure
what the last two guys can do, but who cares? They also snared Shazor (safety) as an undrafted fren agent. GRADE: A-

SEATTLE: Personally I thought they could have dealt down again if they were going to take Spencer, but got a good OT with a a great attitude at #105 (Willis) for their trouble. Tatupu was a reach, then they took Hill at #98 but they just signed Sharper so I don't know how good of a move that was to take two. Greene isn't a star at QB so even though I
had them going there at #85 that might be questionable. Honestly, their late round picks don't do a lot for me, which hurts them. GRADE: C+

ST. LOUIS: I love the Barron pick, he was potentially a top 5 guy if not for the character concerns. Bartell is quick but apparently got roughed up at one of the all-star games. Atogwe is good, Incognito & Terrell give that beat up line more help, Carter gives the weak secondary more depth and Collins will help that running game. These plays really add up to a pound it out offense. All Ridgeway did was catch 105 passes for 1,399 yards and lead the nation with 127.2 yards receiving per game. They added a punter, 3rd QB & FB (Hedge*censored* is listed at TE) which are all picks I expected. Add it all up and here
you go: GRADE: B+

SAN FRANCISCO: As a Raider fan I hate this, but they did great. Alex Smith is not a "can't miss" but everyone thought he was #1. Baas gives them insurance behind Newberry and likely could start at guard. Gore is a Hearst clone who will bring Barlow back to life. Snyder & Fields are both good picks and even falling off the map with their next few picks
doesn't hurt them I think. It's worth noting that I had them grabbing Bajema (TE) at #249 which they did. GRADE: B

TAMPA BAY: We'll see how Cadillac works out, but I'm glad they took a running back although it's tough to reward them since they simply took
who was left of the Big 3 and might have been better off selecting Mike Williams while grabbing JJ at #36. However, Ruud & Smith fill big needs
and Colmer/Buenning give young blood to a very old O-line. Nicholson and Brackins were both nice picks and Bryant wasn't bad either. They took a couple shots at WR late (Warren/Russell) which I like and
overall I think this could turn out to be a dynamite draft for them. GRADE: B+

CAROLINA: I don't know if Davis was their biggest need, but he's a playmaker. Shelton better be good to warrant that #54 because their line needed earlier attention than #79 where Mathis wasn't exactly a
steal. LeFors gives them the backup QB they needed, Seward was the insurance for Fields but they didn't get a lot of value in their selections overall. GRADE: C+

NEW ORLEANS: When Deuce called his coach to thank him for drafting an OT that says a lot. The defense got some help, but while Bullocks can
play I'm not sold on Fincher. Lyman was a reach at #118 and McPherson could turn out to be Brooks' successor sooner rather than later. Jefferson was a good pick at #193 but overall this isn't a "wow" draft.
GRADE: B-

ATLANTA: I love getting White first, 1452 yards don't lie. Babineaux replaces Jasper so that makes sense. I really don't like Beck (#90) or Boley (#160) who they reached and stole respectively. Are they going
3-4? Even still, they signed two and have Brooking so one of these two is a bench player right? I like going RB, but they should have done it sooner and the same goes for OT. Overall it started strong and faded. GRADE: B-

DETROIT: I have to tell you, I like the Williams pick. Rogers can't stay healthy and as we found out in the past with guys like Snoop Minnis (remember him?) sometimes these things never get better for injury prone guys. He is well suited as being opposite a burner on a team with a running game so why not? Cody is a good bargain, Wilson is probably a stretch and Orlovsky brings some fire to that QB
competition. Goddard/Swancutt are both late round values so overall they didn't do poorly. GRADE: B

CHICAGO: Benson could wind up being a star for them, he fits in well. Bradley I think is a potentiall overrated player. He caught like 27 balls? Yeah, most of them went for touchdowns but that's college. Orton could turn out to be a nice pick but with limited selections I would have liked to see more movement from them. Other than Orton & Benson I
don't think anyone will remember this draft: GRADE: B-

MINNESOTA: I'm going to disagree again because I think Williamson's speed fits in great for their dome and with their running game. If they reached a bit for him they made up for it with James who should have gone top 10. The Cowboys will regret not taking him. Johnson is a good guard, Fox is a versatile secondary player and Fason was viewed as a
top 50 pick by a lot of people. Hell, Mosley isn't bad either. I like it. GRADE: A-

GREEN BAY: This is tough because in the short term it sucks, but in the long term it could be great. They needed to get the Favre replacement thing over with and he very easily could have gone 5 or 8. Collins at
#51 is questionable and although they have question marks with Driver (fluke accident) Driver (age) and Ferguson (coming off an injury) I don't know why they didn't do that later or deal down. Honestly, a lot of these picks are questionable. Bragg was a nice pick at #195 if they hadn't burned up a pick on Murphy. Not so good overall. GRADE: C-

WASHINGTON: These guys need a clue. I'm not sure Rogers isn't overrated and just because the others were gone doesn't mean they had to take him. Campbell is not worth 3 picks and neither was Losman last year, that's just stupid. McCune is old and with limited picks they take two fullbacks? What the hell are they thinking? Newberry was decent, but
this was a terrible draft: GRADE: D

DALLAS: I love what they did with their front 7 early on, but I would have liked to see them take a WR somewhere. Barber is a good complement to Jones at RB but I don't know why they grab two more DEs at #132 and #224 instead of taking shots with bigger needs. I like OT, but it should have been sooner. Good early, bad late. GRADE: B

NY GIANTS: How do you grade a draft with 4 picks? Well, they were pretty smart. Webster was a 1st round talent and Tuck should have gone in the top 50. Jacobs is a nice pounder to do what Dayne was supposed to have done. Moore is a decent pick to. With limited picks they did very well. GRADE: B+

PHILADELPHIA: They tried to move around more and failed, but still did very well with all their picks. Patterson gives them the go ahead to ship Simon, Brown makes Mitchell unemployed and Pinkston a #3, McCoy might be overrated at #63 but he fills a need and Moats provides the much needed second RB. Considine is a good player and so are Cole &
Armstrong. Not a lot of great late picks, but good ones early. GRADE: B+

OAKLAND: Right away I can tell you that if I'm their GM I take Rodgers first, then either Arrington or Burnett. After that they could have used the #105 they threw away for one of several good RBs that went early in the 4th. The draft was saved with Hawthorne and Riddle who both should have been long gone. McMahon gives former teammate Gallery
someone to pal around with and Walter is going to start in 2006 or 2007. It's a puzzling draft, but throwing out what they could have or should have done it was a good one. Don't forget, with the new rules it pays to have quick corners. PICK: B+

DENVER: This was a puzzler. Three CBs first? I know Indy torched them, but that's overkill. Getting Clarett did two things. It kept him from Oakland and set up a potential deal down the line. They did it with
Gary (or did they let him go?) Portis and Droughns. Does Ernster also punt? If not that's a waste. Overall I think this was as bad as it gets. PICK: D-

SAN DIEGO: I thought they would go D-line with both of their first round picks, and they got good players. Jackson gives them twin towers at TE (where he should play) and Sproles gives LT some relief.
Britt/Sims/Mruczkowski help the line although I felt like they should have gone there earlier, but I don't fault them given the value of their picks. GRADE: B+

KANSAS CITY: Johnson is a possible steal at #15. Colquitt is a terrible move at #99 for a team that just dealt away a pick and needed defensive
help. Ditto that at #116 with Thorpe (WR) because they have a history of making poor choices at the position. Grigsby & Hodge aren't bad middle round picks, but other than Parquet (OT at #238) they were
horrible late. GRADE: B-

TENNESSEE: I don't know that Jones was their best decision if they could have dealt down. Roos was a huge reach and they should have just stuck with Loper who was a better pick. Roby, Jones & Williams? Do they need three new receivers? Maybe two, but other than Roydell these guys are not impact potential guys. All told I just don't understand a lot of their selections. For as many picks as they wound up with they didn't do very well. GRADE: B-

HOUSTON: I like Johnson, and going Morency/Mathis gives their offense more punch. They needed more help on the line than Hodgdon and overpaid for Buchanon after giving up a #78 (effectively) more than KC gave up for Surtain. GRADE: B

JACKSONVILLE: I don't think Jones fits with them, but they made up for it by snaring Barnes. Pearman is another nice prospect who can catch the ball. Stark & Sensabaugh will help their secondary and Owens (102 catches) is another one of those hugely productive WRs who could replace Jimmy Smith. All told they did a good job. GRADE: B+

INDIANAPOLIS: Jackson was really overlooked in this crop and should have gone sooner, but Hayden was a reach and Burns probably was too. Gandy is seen as a guy who can do some things, but then to grab another center later? Two more linebackers after they have recently drafted a bunch of them? Kicker is good and so is RB but why not sooner? A truly
mixed bag. GRADE: C+

CLEVELAND: They stole the show. Frye to Edwards, Pool & Perkins doing the Sooner thing in the secondary and I don't know how much more value
they could have gotten with picks 1-4. After that they fell apart, but it doesn't really matter. GRADE: B+

CINCINNATI: Pollack is a man, and Thurman was a good value at #48 so I like their start bolstering their defense. Then they grab Henry which
surprised me even though he was a top 40 talent. It got worse when they spent their #190 on another WR with CJ, Housh & Washington as their young trio (they will dump Warrick). Help on the offensive line is
always good and just grading on talent they did nicely. Picking up Wilkerson (centera) after the draft was also a nice play. GRADE: B+

BALTIMORE: Another team with two Sooners and they got them with good value. More bulk up front, a QB to push Boller and they made good use of their picks overall. GRADE: B

PITTSBURGH: When value meets need, you did well. Miller should have gone top 15, McFadden was top 40 and Gibson was top 75 at worst. Wallace and Kemoeatu were also probably top 100 players if you ask me so they got 5 quality players. Excellent work. GRADE: A

MIAMI: It's not surprising to see them pick 3 SEC guys, but they made some good moves. Brown is a star, Roth brings youth after they added age at DE, Crowder has 1st round upside and they know what they are getting in Daniels. Without a lot of picks they made the most of Saban's first draft. GRADE: B+

BUFFALO: I guess they have given up on Josh Reed and think that OT isn't a priority. I don't like that, but I do like Everett and they did grab two O-line players. What they didn't do is bend on the Henry trade demands which was stupid. That factors in. GRADE: C

NY JETS: They had to get Nugent because the Vikes would have. I played soccer with Doug Brien's brother and he got a raw deal because 40+ yard
FGs at Heinz Field are tough to make if you look at the numbers, which stupid people don't. Two safeties is iffy, but with Miller a 1st round talent the secondary gets a boost. Houston gives them more depth at RB but this was overall a weird draft for me. GRADE: B-

NEW ENGLAND: I was on their pulse because I matched up a lot of the positions they would take close to where they did it. Kaczur went about
where he should have although I wonder if Mankins wasn't a reach. I like dealing down for Hobbs and Claridge was a good value. Another TE? Even at Mr. Irrelevant that was weird. In the end how can you question what they do. GRADE: B+
