Nadia Turner looks bad, sounds good as American Idol 4 semifinals finish round two
Rock and country music have officially invaded American Idol. Unlike last week when I pegged all 4 who would be booted I am much less certain whose dream is now over.GUYS: It somewhat shocks me to say this again, but Bo Bice is leading the competition by a wide margin. His value could dwindle in the finals when he is forced to sing something that isn’t his style but for now he is money. Joseph Murena would be my winner if I had to call one right now. He delivered the goods with “Let’s Stay Together” and has the entire package. Constantine Maroulis is hard to figure out, but he certainly has his own style. His “Hard to Handle” by The Black Crowes left a lot to be desired for me, but I know a lot of young women out there will pour in votes for him. Scott Savol has exactly the opposite problem. He’ll have a tough time finding a core voting group, but he has a very good voice.
Nikko Smith gets my turnaround of the week award for looking better and sounding great singing “Let’s Get it On”. Most importantly, he outperformed the three other black guys and probably earned himself another week in the process. David Brown is the guy who might be hurt by his solid showing until he fixes that awful hairstyle. Anwar Robinson was close behind those two with “What’s Goin’ On” and I’d like to know what’s going on with that outfit that looked like army gear. They don’t vote in Iraq brother.
Mario Vazquez showed up in basically jeans with a T-shirt and sounded below average for the second straight week. I have him as the cumulative low scoring male thus far by a large margin so his days could be numbered. Anthony Fedorov continues to disappoint and was fairly dismal singing “I Want to Know What Love Is” by Foreigner. For the guy tabbed as the next Clay Aiken I don’t know if he has a lot of voters out there. Travis Tucker was clearly the worst of the black quartet this week, stumbling through Lionel Richie’s “All Night Long” which was the worst song choice in recent memory. Can his looks save him?
WHO IS OUT? If Joseph or Bo exit I would be very surprised, but other than that they are all pretty much fair game. I think Scott sneaks under the radar for another week and Nikko bought a week with a strong effort. Anwar has a lot of personality and will endear himself to voters. Mario is my first cut because he really hasn’t done a lot to stand out. He will have a tough time earning votes on his smile alone. David is my second cut, mostly because now that it is down to ten the votes will be split among the four black guys and he's not as good looking as Travis, who was worse this week. I certainly don’t think Constantine is above elimination this week, and Travis isn’t either but I have to stick two names out there and I’ll go with Mario and David.
GIRLS: Janay Castine was jobbed by the judges because she was clearly the best female performer of the night. Sometimes I wonder what the three stooges are thinking. Celena Rae looks anorexic, but her performance was good and she is a steady performer. Nadia Turner had an ugly outfit, but posted the third best score. Jessica Sierra really wowed me this week and proved that choosing “Against All Odds” last week was her only mistake. Vonzell Solomon gets on my nerves, but in my top half she should be safe again.
Mikalah Gordon toned down her look, but didn’t improve her voice. Lindsay Cardinale ruined the Patty Loveless song “I Try to Think About Elvis” and proved nothing vocally although she ditched the lingerie. Amanda Avila was another who chose a poor song with “Turn the Beat Around” by Gloria Estefan and did nothing with it. Carrie Underwood absolutely fell apart singing “Piece of My Heart” and confusing the judges who didn’t realize that country singer Faith Hill covered the song a few years ago. Her strong following in the south, namely Oklahoma, might give her the same effect that Jasmine Trias picked up in Hawaii last year. Speaking of Hawaii, Aloha Mischeaux definitely waved aloha to her chances by trying to do Alicia Keys. She closed the last show in style, but was a disaster opening this one.
WHO IS OUT? Mikalah has by far my lowest cumulative score, but she probably sticks around on personality because people like her. Aloha is next and her terrible outing this week puts her firmly out the door. Carrie gets a pass for that strong southern vote, but will need to step it up if she wants to stay. Unless lack of talent crushes either Carrie or Mikalah, the second cut boils down to Amanda and Lindsey. Something tells me Lindsey loses that battle for two reasons. First, her home state of Louisiana makes her a tough bet against Oklahoma golden girl Carrie, talented Texan Celena plus three girls from Florida and another from Georgia. She is sandwiched between those groups and that makes her vulnerable. Plus, her performance stunk.
Subtlety is not one of my strengths
