This Ask MeFi question, combined with the eagerness of MickeyLex's wife to try it, caused me to try out Herbivore (we went to the one on Valencia.) Service was nice, but horrible (slow, and I never actually got my entree...and after mentioning Zachary's peanut allergy, you'd have thought they'd have warned us about peanuts in dishes ohter than the one we specifically asked about.) The food was quite good, however (I tried Zachary's and Gwen's dishes.) I was still hungry, since my meal never came, and low-and-behold, right there, around the corner, is Jay's Cheesesteak, which makes seitan "cheesesteaks". In contrast to the review linked to, I found Jay's to be wonderful. In fact, outside of Philly, the best I've had is probably at Jay's. I do think I can beat their veggie version, though, with "Philly Style" Steak Tofurky Deli slices. I bought them, skeptical that they'd be any good. After all, the namesake Tofurky and other deli slices range from mediocre to putrescent. But some seasoned sauteed onions and peppers, some provolone, and these were downright tasty. I only wish I'd also had some appropriate bread...
