I considered making this a "Top n" list, or possibly "Politics". It's about one of the most important rules you can teach your kids. Those rules are:
- Treat everyone well, even those who don't deserve it.
- Life's not fair.
- Don't be afraid to lose.
And, on Facebook walls, recently, #2 doesn't appear widely understood...
So, here's the crux of how #2 needs to be taught, again:
For every self-righteous, well-off, successful person: you, alone, are not responsible for where you got. Even if you worked hard, you still benefitted from luck, from lots of unseen forces that helped you, and, in many cases, from starting out advantaged. There are others with the same work ethic who have not had your success.
For every bitter, struggling person, who thinks the world owes them the same result as others: your plight is at least partially the result of decisions or actions you made. Even if your circumstances were much harder than anyone else's you know, you almost assuredly can see ways you could have done things better. I hope there is an opportunity for you to do them better, in the future. There are others with similar circumstances who have fared better than you.
And for the rest of us, just remember...the world ain't always fair. But if you focus on the first and third rules, I think you'll find you can be a lot happier.
