Vonzell Solomon tries to keep the torch alive for the women on American Idol 4 finals

EntertainmentWho chooses these themes? They didn’t do the leaders any favors with 70’s dance music, that’s for sure. Much maligned Anwar Robinson wound up as our top rated performer with “September” from Earth Wind and Fire, a song he said he’s familiar with. He seems to be getting more comfortable on stage and although he is tied for fifth on our cumulative ratings he is within a point of fourth now. Constantine Maroulis opened the show with “Nights on Broadway” from The Bee Gees and at the time it seemed pretty poor until everyone else performed. Bo Bice closed out the show in style with “The Vehicle” and cemented his #1 overall rating while certainly avoiding a repeat showing in the bottom three this week. Vonzell Solomon just keeps plugging along although she needs to stop taking on Whitney Houston after singing “I’m Every Woman” from Chaka Khan, a song the diva later covered. Carrie Underwood showed a lot of vocal skill with “Macarthur Park” from Donna Summer, but we didn’t like the overall result although she is still comfortably in our top 3 overall.

Anthony Fedorov grips every week and his performance of “Don’t Take Away the Music” left me hoping they will take away his microphone pretty soon. Scott Savol is firmly in our cumulative bottom spot and his butchering of “Everlasting Love” was another reason why.

WHO’S OUT? Scott and Anthony are so overdue it’s not even funny. Anwar and Vonzell seem to be singing well enough for viewers to question the clear top 3 (Carrie, Constantine, Bo if you’re stupid). This week I think there is a strong chance that Carrie finds herself in the “first safe” position so I’ll go ahead and predict that even with the entire South voting for her. That leaves Anthony sweating out another week and Scott leaving because I will predict this until it happens. He’s a thug who should be thrown off the tour.

Anwar Robinson gets unexpected boot
Authored by: norcalfella on Thursday, April 21 2005

Oh people, what are you thinking? I knew Scott and Anthony would be in the bottom, and they were which makes me 10/18 on who will be in that group.

However, Anwar was just starting to get over the fact that everyone suddenly knew he was gay and improving his performances. I did feel he had a shot to be in the bottom 3, but I never thought he would be out this week.

On another note, I think AI needs to shake up their voting procedure and at the same time improve their ratings. Instead of simply letting the person with the fewest votes go, how about having a second vote where the public votes which of the bottom 3 should go home?

Think about that for a moment. Would people vote Anwar (or Nadia last week) as less talented than Scott? No chance. With the voting switch I would estimate that Jessica and Nadia would still be in the competition over Scott and Anthony meaning there would be the same number of girls left instead of just one. They would get an additional half hour results episode out of this (or simply announce who is out at the start of the following week, a la Nashville Star) plus a ton more revenue from voting.

Another switch (if they decide not to do the first, or maybe in conjunction with it) would be the "judge's save". This is something where twice from the time the finals reach 12 and culminating with the final 5, a judge can save a voted out singer from being cut. They could do this if they feel that they simply had one bad outing and need more time to develop. To this point Nadia and perhaps Anwar would have been saved.

Just because a show gets great ratings doesn't mean it can't get better...

that's my take
