Fantasy Football 2005 first draft

It is too early to draft serious teams, but that doesn't stop me from testing the waters. I picked in the always unpredictable #9 spot but this season (and this early) I was okay with that.

Things sure have changed in the fantasy landscape with half of the first 8 picks NOT being RBs. Manning went #1, Culpepper #3 with Owens and Moss going 7-8. I thought about taking Moss, but when that disappeared I went with the notion that McGahee might turn out to be a TD machine. For the record, LT, Alexander, Holmes and James were off the board.

Behind me McNabb & Harrison were taking which left me right where I wanted to be selecting McAllister to fill my backfield. That started an RB run which usually takes place in round 1 with Dillon, Lewis, D.Davis, Barber, Green, Portis, R.Johnson and J.Jones going to fill round 2 and Martin starting round 3.

Four receivers went in the fourth round, much to my chagrin because after Horn, Holt and C.Johnson were taken I was left with A.Johnson as my #1. I also got distracted and didn't realize that Gonzalez was off the board so instead of getting either Gates or Gonzo I was stuck because Gates was taken behind me. Instead I got holdout Walker to serve as my co-#1 with my 4th pick.

It is never too early to load up your backfield, so in round 5 I took Lamont Jordan and if he doesn't light the world on fire that's okay. If he does I can sell high with either McGahee or McAllister to improve m team elsewhere. After the turn I filled out my starting receivers with Coles who I believe will rebound nicely back with the Jets.

Round 7 saw me make yet another RB/WR pick as I possibly reached to grab Evans although I believe he takes over as the #1 this season with the Bills. Then I couldn't wait any longer for QB so I took Brooks.

In round 9 I possibly got the steal of the draft with Bell before taking another risk at QB with Collins. Finally I had to turn my attention to K/TE/D so I took Stover who I believe will be a huge beneficiary of the team's new receiving talent. I backed that up with Heath Miller at TE followed by the revamped Dallas defense and then Putzier in case Miller's rookie year is a bust. I closed out with Larry Johnson just to tick off the Holmes owner.

All told I didn't pillage, but I believe I did well.

QB-Brooks (Collins)
WR-A.Johnson/Walker/Coles (Evans)
RB-McGahee/McAllister (Jordan/Bell/L.Johnson)
TE-Miller (Putzier)
K-Stover
D-Dallas

I will be hoping one of my QBs can limit turnovers and that I can parlay my RB depth into an improved set of receivers or possibly even a TE or D.

Well apparently I'm not right all of the time and this is the spot where I tell everyone that this just might be the season to deviate from the flooding at RB early on. That's because there are a lot of similar producing backs who you can grab while losing only a small amount of production as others are taken instead of losing huge chunks by not getting a receiver. Case in point, my latest draft from the #4 slot.

It was no surprise when Manning (people never learn) Tomlinson and Alexander went off the board and that left me gripping before I took a shot at Holmes to fill my RB1 role. Then things got interesting.

With 12 RBs off the board by my #17 pick plus Culpepper and Moss (the same team got both) and Harrison it became clear to me that I had to stray from my strategy because I had Holmes in tow. I took Holt for my WR1 and not surprisingly McNabb went immediately with Owens soon to follow along with (some people are weird) Trent Green, Rudi Johnson and Julius Jones although not in that order.

Now I'm faced with 15 RBs off the board while another safe stud WR is there just calling out to me. I took Chad Johnson at WR2 for a dynamic duo. Gonzo went next and Gates followed in a few picks with Horn, Andre Johnson and Ward also being selected in a WR frenzy and Kevin Jones making it 16 RBs in the first 30 picks with 4 QBs, 2 TEs and 8 WRs.

Walker, Burleson and Wayne went in round 4 before I picked but I could care less about that at this point and was similarly not worried about Favre, Shockey or Steven Jackson going. I got my Raider stud Jordan to start at RB2 with pick #37. Then I kept acting crazy in round 5.

That's because Darrell Jackson, Boldin, Coles and Bennett were all taken leaving 14 WRs off the board along with Heap being the 4th TE selected and Bulger the 6th QB gone. I wasn't going with another RB yet and didn't like the available WRs or QBs at that point so I grabbed Witten at TE hoping he would give me reliable points.

When round 6 rolled around I was able to secure Bell as the first RB off my bench, a guy many are projecting as more like second or third round material. In round 7 I kept acting crazy by grabbing the Baltimore defense since I had my choice of any unit. Still without a QB or WR3 to start I wasn't in panic mode.

That's because I grabbed Mr. 3,500/25 Brady to play QB and hopefully still emerging star Lelie at WR in rounds 8 and 9 respectively. At this point I am pinching myself and then I grab Akers to handle the kicking duties to round out my starting lineup.

In round 11 I took Fitzgerald and then rookie Edwards in round 14 for my backup WRs. Because the other owners are fools I took Larry Johnson as my second backup (and Holmes insurance) in round 12, one pick after Marshall Faulk was taken, pissing off the Jackson owner.

In round 13 I grabbed Graham as a backup TE and possible pairing with Brady depending on the opponent with my final pick being Big Ben as a backup QB that I know will be in the lineup every week and won't make turnovers.

The moral is that even without going RB early I still wound up with this:

QB-Brady (Roethlisberger)
WR1-Holt (Fitzgerald)
WR2-C.Johnson (Edwards)
WR3-Lelie
RB1-Holmes (L.Johnson)
RB2-Jordan (Bell)
TE-Witten (Franks)
K-Akers
D-Baltimore

My biggest concern is bye week trouble with the Raven defense taking week 3 off so I'll either have to make a 2 for 1 deal, bite the bullet or expose Braylon Edwards, Big Ben or Daniel Graham to the wire. I'll also be bitten in week 5 when Jordan & Holmes/LJ are off, but by then it will be apparent what I have in Jordan & Bell with one of them being shipped off to another team.

In the end, a pretty dangerous team...

that's my take
