NFL Draft 2005 Grades and Analysis

SportSince folks seem to be using Google to get to us more, I will post this article and give a link to my Mock Draft grades which I have included on my original 7 round mock. I have given analysis of each pick, quick hit grades, full ratings after more thought and who these teams signed as free agents after the draft. For our first effort at the draft I think we've done pretty damn well don't you?

NFL Draft 2005 Grades and Analysis

ESPN ran a poll asking for a letter grade for every team. Which team came up the best? Well, for starters there were only four teams that earned better than half "A" marks. They were Arizona (69.3%) Dallas (66.2%) Minnesota (56.8%) and Baltimore (51.0%) while Cleveland (49.7%) just missed.

On the flip side, the five teams given the most "F" grades start with a resounding Denver (31.0%) followed by Buffalo (19.7%) New York Jets (19.6%) Seattle (19.1%) and New York Giants (18.7%). You don't think New Yorkers are negative, do you?

Now if I score it with A=5 points, B=3 points, C=2 points, D=1 point and F=0 points here is what I come up with. New England is not included because their pop-up window won't work:

1-Arizona (414.6)
2-Dallas (403.2)
3-Minnesota (378.7)
4-Cleveland (366.7)
5-Baltimore (355.9)
6-Miami (347.4)
7-San Diego (337.7)
8-Cincinnati (333.7)
9-Tampa Bay (331.9)
10-San Francisco (327.2)
11-Pittsburgh (323.7)
12-Chicago (315.6)
13-Philadelphia (313.3)
14-Carolina (308.2)
15-Detroit (307.5)
16-Kansas City (299.3)
17-Tennessee (281.9)
18-Indianapolis (274.6)
19-Atlanta (265.1)
20-Jacksonville (263.7)
21-New Orleans (243.4)
22-Green Bay (241.5)
23-Houston (235.0)
24-NY Jets (229.1)
25-St. Louis (227.7)
26-Oakland (223.0)
27-Washington (214.6)
28-NY Giants (207.5)
29-Seattle (183.6)
30-Buffalo (178.1)
31-Denver (157.2)
New England (no data)

What does this tell us? Well, teams with two first round picks were ranked too high as know nothings assume those guys will both be studs. Dallas (2) Minnesota (3) and San Diego (7) were all at the top and Washington (27) was the only one shafted with two picks in round 1. I did rank Minnesota #3, but folks aren't basing that on the depth of the draft the way I am.

Conversely, those without a first round selection (all the NY teams) were given the shaft as the Jets (24) Giants (28) and Bills (30) were given low scores. Those teams were all a few notches below where I had them because I have the good sense to realize it isn't all about round 1.

There were 8 teams the public ranked 10+ slots away from where I had them. Naturally their assessment of the Raiders (#26) was biased because there are haters out there, and mine (#4) might have been too, so perhaps around the middle of the pack is accurate. St. Louis (#25) was way too low, and they didn't think my top pick Pittsburgh (#10) was as spectacular as I did.

On the other side, people thought Chicago (#12, my #25) did much better than my assessment, while San Diego (#7) and Tennessee (#17) were each a dozen spots higher on ESPN's poll. My bottom dwellers Kansas City (#16) and Carolina (#14) each scored 10 spots higher on this list.

that's my take
