NFL Power Poll 9/8/05

SportHere is a quick look at where the teams stand following the exhibition schedule. #1 Indianapolis: The signing of Corey Simon has cemented them as the team to beat in the AFC. It is a decision that could come back to haunt Philadelphia when these teams meet in Detroit for the Lombardi Trophy.

#2 Philadelphia: They are not a big happy family yet, and now Westbrook is squawking about money too. However, last year they trashed the competition by wide margins and the problems only lead to closer victories.

#3 NY Jets: I am sold on this team. They can run the ball, play defense and their special teams got a big boost with Nugent kicking and Graham punting. We will see how long they make me look good.

#4 New England: It is getting old talking about all the missing parts. The biggest issue I have with them now is arrogance. Their moves make less and less sense all the time. Thinking that Andre' Davis will make up for banking David Terell to replace David Patten is a prime example.

#5 Atlanta: The addition by subtraction law has never been more evident than letting Price walk. They show confidence in their young receivers and stay true to what they do which is run their DVD (Dunn, Vick, Duckett) offense on the ground and play defense.

#6 Minnesota: Adding Koren Robinson is an explosive decision. At this point they have a few first round receivers waiting to see if they can happen upon a #1. The truth is that they might not need one. Culpepper can spread it around and the defense can't help but be better.

#7 Denver: It is time for the east coast morons to realize that while the Broncos do get crushed annually in the playoffs, at least they get there which is more than I can say for 22 teams every season. The defense is better, Lelie is better and the ground game remains in motion.

#8 Baltimore: Right now I want to show them some respect and drop them if Boller falters. The receiving help gives Billick an opportunity to actually call some offensive plays, which is his speciality if you have forgotten that he engineered Minnesota's high scoring unit.

#9 Dallas: I love the Peerless Price signing. He brings familiarity with Bledsoe, who unlike Vick has confidence in him and can deliver the damn ball. With Jones running and the defense ready to surge back to their 2003 prominence this could be a scary team.

#10 Carolina: Writers everywhere are crowning them NFC if not Super Bowl champions. They had a nice run to end the year, but until they find a steady influence in the backfield I cannot put them any higher than this.

#11 St. Louis: This weekend in San Francisco should showcase everything about this team that is good, which is their offense. It will take time to figure out if they have enough defense and more importantly special teams to get it done this season.

#12 Pittsburgh: It is impossible not to worry about a sophomore slump to Roethlisberger and injuries to both Bettis and Staley. Willie Parker might be a nice short or even long term solution, but the doubts are creeping in for me.

#13 Oakland: This is going to be a better team than their final record indicates. The defense didn't add overpriced, overrated talent. Instead they bolstered the balance of the offense so they wouldn't have to be on the field all the time. That sounds smarter to me.

#14 Seattle: I don't know what to make of this team. Sometimes I see a winner, other times I see a team with holes. The run defense is alarming enough for them to lose to a lot of teams. If Warrick can't resurrect his career the passing game will be one dimensional.

#15 San Diego: They are sailing from their dream season, but a storm is ahead. Last year they took advantage of many good breaks and few injuries. With a division title target on their back I am scaling down my expectations for them.

#16 Detroit: What is not to like about this young offense? Well, Harrington for a starting quarterback would be one thing and that's a big one. Garcia wasn't impressive even before getting hurt and now it is all on Joey's shoulders. Middle of the pack until I see more.

#17 Green Bay: I think the wheels are ready to fall off. Letting both guards walk and leaving Ahman Green without a contract extension are decisions I have to question. Extending Sherman was about the dumbest thing I have seen in a while.

#18 Jacksonville: I am not sold until I see their young receivers make plays while Jimmy Smith and Fred Taylor stay healthy. It is a fragile recipe for them this season because an injury to either of those guys puts too much pressure on their talented defense.

#19 Cincinnati: If the defense ever revs it up this will be a dangerous team. Until I see it this is where they sit for me. Offensively they are a talented young group.

#20 Houston: The strides are being made slowly, but surely. Not paying more attention to the offensive line is a big concern. If Jerome Mathis can emerge as a rookie they could surprise a few teams.

#21 Buffalo: Count me in on the group not convinced Losman is ready. Bledsoe might have been a statue back there, but he was a big reason for their late season surge by protecting the football. McGahee is a fine player and not ready to carry a team.

#22 Kansas City: Trent Green's health concerned me before I heard about his issues. The defensive additions were a waste of money and they still have an offense that can be handled by a team capable of stopping Gonzalez and Holmes because everyone else stinks.

#23 New Orleans: The roof caved in on their season before it got started. Playing as road warriors is a terrible situation to be in. I know the Raiders had a difficult time their first season back in Oakland just taking a one hour flight not to mention the heart wrenching aspect.

#24 Tampa Bay: The defense is fading and the offense is rising. If they can intersect in the middle this season it is possible for them to make a very surprising run. I doubt it, but if Gruden is given the time he will turn this team back into a winner with his own players.

#25 Arizona: I could be wrong on this one, especially if their defense continues the exhibition success that I witnessed with the line looking stout. Offensively I love the surrounding talent, but like in Detroit they have a weakness at quarterback. Warner makes poor decisions and is not a good leader.

#26 Washington: This is another team I could see rising up in the ranks with a break or two. Their offensive line is better off this year and the defense is still in good shape. That little thing we like to call a quarterback on the other hand is a big problem.

#27 NY Giants: Eli has a tough hill to climb and with a poor defense he has been placed in a much worse situation than Big Ben who made the discrepancy in their draft selection seem like a genius move by Pittsburgh.

#28 San Francisco: I like the pieces they have put together and Rattay starting is a good idea for now. There are still many holes to fill, but unlike some of the aimless teams at the bottom of this list they have a direction.

#29 Miami: Hey Ricky you're so fine, but you won't be here to help us for a month and we have no quarterback. This is a skeleton crew for now and it might serve Saban well to go 2-14 so he can get Leinart. Possibly no team needs him more.

#30 Chicago: Orton will probably be their starter next season as well, and the offensive additions will get valuable playing time this year. For now, they can't score a lick and that's the end of it.

#31 Tennessee: If anything they have improved their chances of running the football, but will be behind so often it won't matter. When they are, doing without their best receiver has to hurt. This is not going to be a good team.

#32 Cleveland: I have no faith in these idiots whatsoever. Does someone pay them off to make poor first round draft picks? They are left with a bunch of mediocre players and no leadership. You can expect a long season ahead as they battle for the top pick.
