NFL Predictions 2006 Week 2

Back for more ...

Buffalo (0-1) @ Miami (0-1): pick MIA –6/under 37

The first of three games where the loser will be 0-2 and statistically speaking pretty much finish off their Super Bowl title dreams. With extra days of rest, the Florida heat and more talent all the indicators sway to the Dolphins. I was impressed how the Bills almost sprung the upset over New England, but as scary as this is to say right now Miami is a better team than the Pats. Losman will get swarmed, and Culpepper will have an easier time than he did against the Steelers.

Miami 20, Buffalo 6

Carolina (0-1) @ Minnesota (1-0): pick MIN +1/over 37

Things are getting ugly in a hurry for the Panthers. After relying heavily on wide receiver Steve Smith during their run to last year’s NFC title game now he is pulling up lame on them. The ground game was supposed to be in good hands with a healthy DeShaun Foster and stud rookie DeAngelo Williams. Only Foster toted the rock last week and his 54 yards and 3.6 average rush were less than impressive. If the Vikings get up early and give Chester Taylor another 31 carries it won’t matter if he averages 2.8 again. I think they do, and are able to hold on.

Minnesota 24, Carolina 20

Cleveland (0-1) @ Cincinnati (1-0): pick CIN –10/under 41.5

A few injuries took a bite out of the Browns and the battle of Ohio is more like a breather for the Bengals. Palmer walked through the opener in Kansas City because the game didn’t dictate the need for him to throw many passes. Whether or not it does this week I believe they open it up at least enough to get Chad Johnson on the highlight reel. On the other side, what I have seen thus far of Frye I like. This could be a scuffle in future seasons between these two. Right now the Bengals are the more focused team.

Cincinnati 26, Cleveland 14

Detroit (0-1) @ Chicago (1-0): pick DET +9/under 32

Losing is never really progress, but the Lions went nose to nose with the defending NFC champs Seattle and kept them from scoring a touchdown. Steve Hutchinson leaving for Minnesota or not, it was a great start for the Lion defense. Now the offense has to figure out a way to get by the Bears who are coming off a shutout in Green Bay. These meetings are usually interesting regardless of which team comes in favored and I expect this to be no different.

Chicago 13, Detroit 6

Houston (0-1) @ Indianapolis (1-0): pick IND –13/over 47

When these teams hook up all I can think about is a blowout. The Texans managed to help McNabb turn back the clock last week with a rag tag set of receivers. How do you think Peyton Manning is going to fare against them? After a few early scores I anticipate the ground game of the Colts being given a chance to get into a groove. Aside from Jacksonville next week it could be smooth sailing to 5-0. Anyone who thinks top pick Mario Williams will register a sack in this game please stand. Besides Mario’s parents and Charlie Casserly. Didn’t think so.

Indianapolis 38, Houston 10

New Orleans (1-0) @ Green Bay (0-1): pick NO –2/over 38

If other teams aren’t careful the Saints might start gaining momentum. Reggie Bush’s debut was everything people on the West Coast thought it would be, explosive and productive. Meanwhile, the Packers failed to score and Favre is already frustrated. Swapping running backs with Houston and signing a problem child wide receiver is not exactly a remedy for what ails the Green Bay offense. Neither is an opponent with a sound quarterback, two threats at running back plus a hot rookie wide receiver who was nearly Mr. Irrelevant and is now making plays. This is a Katrina pick because I am starting to feel the Saints gaining momentum for their home opener next week.

New Orleans 23, Green Bay 17

NY Giants (0-1) @ Philadelphia (1-0): pick NYG +3/under 42

It is amazing how an opponent can change the perception of your team. Or how statistics can be misleading. New York rushed by Indianapolis 186-55, but the battle tested Colts held them down in a game they never trailed. Houston offered little resistance to the Eagles. Coming off a season with 2 wins this doesn’t prove much. What I expect here is a game that matches late season intensity. Philadelphia knows they can make an early statement to everyone who picked them for the cellar. New York is desperate to avoid starting 0-2. The difference for me is that while Westbrook has the potential to be a Barber-like back taking over games, the real thing is in town. Plus, Westbrook is hurting. I like the New York pass rush to bring McNabb back to Earth.

NY Giants 19, Philadelphia 14

Oakland (0-1) @ Baltimore (1-0): pick BAL –13/under 34

It wasn’t all that long ago that these teams met for the right to go to Super Bowl XXXV. The Ravens had one of the finest defenses in league history then, and still have quite a bit of talent as evidenced by blanking Tampa Bay on the road. The Raiders were a prolific offense, but all of that has faded away. This incarnation was held scoreless on their home field by San Diego. I find it hard to imagine Oakland can come out more inspired on the road against an equally tough defense to stay in this game. Baltimore is capable of slamming Lewis and Anderson at this defense on the ground and letting Ray Lewis handle business on the other side.

Baltimore 22, Oakland 3

Tampa Bay (0-1) @ Atlanta (1-0): pick TB +6/over 35

The Bucs have to look at this as the dreaded “must win” game. They were blanked at home and catch a break with stud defensive end John Abraham likely out. Last year the Falcons lost two high scoring affairs. This time around I expect the scoring to be at a premium. Monte Kiffin’s defense was actually very good in the opener, allowing touchdown drives to open the first and fourth quarters but not much else. The remaining 10 drives produced just 119 yards on 41 plays. For Atlanta’s offense it appears trading away Duckett simply changed their ground game from DVD to DVN after Jerious Norwood’s 10 carries for 66 yards in his debut. Coupled with Vick and Dunn the group toted the rock 46 times for 246 yards against Carolina. It is too hard for me to pick against a team with that much rushing power.

Atlanta 20, Tampa Bay 16

Arizona (1-0) @ Seattle (1-0): pick SEA –7/under 47

Early season battle for NFC West supremacy? Hardly. The Seahawks might have struggled in Detroit, but they are habitually poor on the road and regularly outstanding at home. The Cardinals had to sputter by a weak San Francisco team even with the extra juice of opening a brand new stadium. If there is an indicator to me how this game will go it is defense. Seattle actually has secondary play, unlike the 49ers and can make another lackluster showing from James running the ball actually matter. In the meantime, Alexander is out to prove he can survive the loss of Hutchinson and the Madden curse. Many people believe this game could turn the tide in this division should the Cards pull the upset. I say not even close.

Seattle 28, Arizona 17

St. Louis (1-0) @ San Francisco (0-1): pick STL –3/over 43.5

Haslett really revitalized the defense for the Rams, and their success against Denver will travel with them to the city by the bay. Alex Smith probably wishes his rookie season were erased from the books because last week would have made a nice NFL debut. Meanwhile Frank Gore emerged as a serious threat out of the backfield and Antonio Bryant made it known he is the #1 receiver on the 49ers. However, the line is already banged up. Allen is out and Jennings is iffy. Last week they failed to score with Arizona, and now it is up to their defense to match stops. I am not seeing it. St. Louis has a standout rusher in Jackson plus a bevy of receiving threats to throw at this defense. They keep it close though because at home the 49ers can still make almost any team sweat.

St. Louis 27, San Francisco 20

Kansas City (0-1) @ Denver (1-0): pick DEN –10.5/under 38

When Trent Green failed to get up after a vicious hit last week it might have spelled the end to their playoff hopes. If he is able to return in time for their fourth game he must immediately help them outscore Arizona on the road, then challenge Pittsburgh at Heinz Field before hosting San Diego and Seattle. Good luck. This loss already puts them 0-2. The Broncos were flat in St. Louis as they have been known to be in early season road games. This has no bearing on what they realize is a huge divisional game. They smell blood in the water, and unless Plummer throws pick sixes all day long this is a comfortable win.

Denver 27, Kansas City 10

New England (1-0) @ NY Jets (1-0): pick NE –6/under 37

As if this rivalry needs more fuel, the Patriots filed tampering charges against New York relating to the trade talks with Deion Branch, now in Seattle. Mix in Eric Mangini coaching against the team he served as defensive coordinator for last year and things get even more interesting. New York took advantage of poor quarterback play in beating up on Tennessee last week. With Tom Brady at the helm for the Patriots obviously that recipe won’t work. They also got 319 yards passing out of Pennington who completed 73% of his throws. Against a Belichick defense that isn’t going to happen either, so the upset isn’t as likely as it might seem. As bad as New England looked at times last week they still have a power running game and star quarterback to carry them.

New England 20, NY Jets 13

Tennessee (0-1) @ San Diego (1-0): pick SD –11.5/over 37.5

Last week the Chargers sacked Oakland’s new quarterback Aaron Brooks 7 times. This week they will get a chance to sack their old quarterback Kerry Collins. It is hardly possible to look better than San Diego did in dismantling the Raiders last week. They barely needed new starting quarterback Rivers to throw and wore out Raider punter Shane Lechler. About the only thing the Titans can hope for is Vince Young getting nostalgic about playing in southern California again to the point where he goes Rose Bowl mad. Too bad by the time he gets on the field this one will be in the books. Tomlinson is quietly going to run for MVP and Rivers is easing his way into the fold.

San Diego 31, Tennessee 7

Washington (0-1) @ Dallas (0-1): pick WAS +7/under 37.5

It is time to push the panic button for the loser of this game. Last year the Redskins stole a win here and wound up costing the Cowboys a spot in the playoffs. Without Portis to run the ball it will be up to their passing and defense to carry the day. Somehow I don’t think the home debut of Terrell Owens is going to be trumped by more Brunell bombs to Santana Moss. This time around Bledsoe is the one making the crucial deep throws while Julius Jones does just enough on the ground to keep Dallas out of trouble.

Dallas 17, Washington 14

Pittsburgh (1-0) @ Jacksonville (1-0): pick PIT –2.5/under 37.5

This is a simple game to call. If the Jags had their defensive line at full strength it would be a great game. They don’t, and the Steelers can control the tempo with their running game. As Culpepper found out last week, trying to pass on this defense in the clutch can be perilous. Pittsburgh will get the early touchdown and milk it from there. It is hard to bet against Leftwich pulling out another clutch win, but without Stroud and Hayward on the line I’m not sure the defense is up to the task.

Pittsburgh 16, Jacksonville 13
