Part 2: Wherein dbsmall tries to make sense of the Israel/Lebanon conflict
You'll recall that I have supported Israel's strikes on Hamas leadership in the past. Some people who also supported Israel are uncomfortable with the current attacks in Lebanon (on Hisbollah). In fact, the linked-to-blog makes a persuasive point: Lebanon will be less capable of reigning in h1sb0l4h. Lots of innocents will be killed. Public opinion will turn against Israel. Oh ,and cool anecdote from a bar.
But here's the thing...
Lebanon is incapable of reigning in the terrorists, NOW. They're Iran- and Syria- equipped and funded, and it's just more than the Lebanese Army can handle.
Lebanon isn't all that interested in reigning the terrorists in, because, while they may not hate Israel, they're certainly not supporters.
Innocents will be killed, and that absolutely sucks. Poor (literally) people who have absolutely no part in this conflict are being used by both sides.
Oh, and...come on, public opinion? As far as all of their neighbors are concerned, Israel sucks. (I mean, geez....if they cared so much about the plight of the "Palestinians", they'd chop off some segment of one of the other countries and give it to 'em. Israel isn't exactly their 'holy land'...and geographically, they're from trans-Jordan...but I digress.)
I figure that what Israel is doing is the equivalent of Don Corleone having Khartoum (the horse)'s head cut off in the Godfather. They're sending a message to anyone who supports or tolerates terrorists, that it puts them at risk.
Oh, and yeah, Alan Dershowitz is a pugnacious chucklehead for taking reason to its absurd extreme.
Subtlety is not one of my strengths
