NFL Mock Draft 2005 (three rounds) updated 4/22/05

SportHere's a look at the draft if every team stayed put.

Pick

Team

Comments

Pos

Player

1

SF

Any way you slice it, now everyone thinks he is the top pick.

QB

Smith (Utah)

2

MIA

This is a receiver who will turn Feeley into a star or snuff him out as a bust.

WR

Edwards (Michigan)

3

CLE

After acquiring Droughns, when Edwards is taken this is their best bet.

QB

Rodgers (California)

4

CHI

If the rumors that Jones isn’t their answer are true, he’s a great value.

RB

Brown (Auburn)

5

TB

They haven’t totally solved their quarterback issues, but imagine this receiver set.

WR

Williams (USC)

6

TEN

With their choice of defender, I think they go Pac Man.

CB

Jones (West Virginia)

7

MIN

(OAK)

This is really too early for him, but it’s a possibility.

WR

Williamson (South Carolina)

8

AZ

They are shocked to have a choice at running back, and he fits better.

RB

Williams (Auburn)

9

WAS

In the other mock they get Jones and here they get a strict cover man.

CB

Rolle (Miami, FL)

10

DET

He’s seen as either a value or a risk depending on who you ask.

LB

Johnson (Texas)

11

DAL

Given the chance to draft a real playmaker they might take a stab at him.

LB

Merriman (Maryland)

12

SD

(NYG)

To rush the passer is to help out every other part of your defense and he can do it.

DE

James (Wisconsin)

13

HOU

It would be simply criminal if he falls this far and if he does Davis’ run is over.

RB

Benson (Texas)

14

CAR

He’s a bit of a “tweener” but his talent isn’t questioned.

S

Davis (Georgia)

15

KC

They have interest in Davis, so when he goes they take a fast riser.

DE

Ware (Troy State)

16

NO

Talented and ready, he might be gone but if he’s not they snatch him up.

CB

Rogers (Auburn)

17

CIN

Dan Pompeii thinks he will be the first defensive tackle off the board.

DT

Castillo (Northwestern)

18

MIN

Piling up on defense just seems like a good idea as Udeze gets a bookend.

DE

Spears (LSU)

19

STL

Kyle Turley is a mess and if this guy develops their offense could dominate again.

OT

Barron (Florida State)

20

DAL

(BUF)

Losing out on Davis hurts, but here’s another nice piece for their revamped line, even if it is the same as my 7 round mock pick.

DE

Pollack (Georgia)

21

JAX

This is a fast player who can impact their secondary right away.

CB

Washington (Nebraska)

22

BAL

With the top two and the burner gone they grab a consistent, polished performer.

WR

Clayton (Oklahoma)

23

SEA

The defense has been made over at just about every other position.

DT

Johnson (Florida State)

24

GB

He seems to be rising and they lost Sharper so he could fit for them.

S

Pool (Oklahoma)

25

WAS

(DEN)

I can tell you right now that this might have been what they were thinking by dealing into this spot.

TE

Miller (Virginia)

26

OAK

(HOU)

Let’s talk help inside for a team that picked up two old tackles in free agency last year.

DT

Cody (USC)

27

ATL

The line is the bloodline to this team and he’s rated as a mid first rounder.

OT

Brown (Oklahoma)

28

SD

Someone in this range figures to take the chance and a “two pick” team is logical.

WR

Jones (Arkansas)

29

IND

If they can’t deal for a corner they have to take one early and he is flexible.

CB

Jackson (Michigan)

30

PIT

It’s probably not their most pressing need, but the value is here.

LB

Burnett (Tennessee)

31

PHI

They have a lot of picks and flexibility. This allows them to deal Simon.

DT

Patterson (USC)

32

NE

Bruschi isn’t coming back this year or possibly ever and the others are old too.

LB

Crowder (Florida)

33

SF

The line is a lot better, but here the future of it gets brighter.

OT

Barnes (Washington)

34

CLE

After dumping Brown they try again with a guy who could easily go higher or lower.

DE

Cody (Oklahoma)

35

PHI

(MIA)

If they don’t deal for Henry, I really think they will use one of these two picks to grab a quality runner. He fits perfectly into their offense.

RB

Arrington (California)

36

TB

They won’t replace Lynch’s leadership, but talent helps.

S

Shazor (Michigan)

37

TEN

Recreating the defense is a little strange after hiring Chow to run the offense but …

DE

Roth (Iowa)

38

OAK

They need someone to rush the passer – desperately.

DE

Tuck (Notre Dame)

39

CHI

Since they didn’t take a receiver first, they take one now.

WR

White (UAB)

40

NO

(WAS)

Brooks is just about done and in a no trade scenario he probably drops this far.

QB

Campbell (Auburn)

41

DET

When he falls into their lap they have to take him as the successor to Pollard.

TE

Smith (Stanford)

42

DAL

After addressing the line, now the secondary needs a lift and he provides it.

CB

Webster (LSU)

43

NYG

How about protecting Eli?

OG

Brown (Virginia)

44

AZ

They will be looking for a future quarterback in this spot and he’s the best left.

QB

Frye (Akron)

45

CAR

They might not be convinced that Colbert is for real and Smith can stay healthy.

WR

Henry (West Virginia)

46

KC

Their defensive line gave up 4.6 yards per rush last year, second worst in the NFL

DT

Hawthorne (Wisconsin)

47

NYJ

(OAK)

(HOU)

Even if Dyson comes in to replace Abraham they need a future corner. They’ll take a “shot” and the drunk driver.

CB

Miller (Clemson)

48

CIN

He can make a lot of plays and Marvin Lewis will love having another cog on defense.

S

Nicholson (Oklahoma)

49

MIN

Their line keeps this offense chugging.

OG

Baas (Michigan)

50

STL

Their ends keep flying to Seattle.

DE

Canty (Virginia)

51

GB

(NO)

They will have to reach at #24 or fire up a deal to grab either Frye or Campbell, so in this scenario they replenish their guard situation with a guy from Favre country.

OG

Johnson (Mississippi)

52

JAX

Someone needs to replace Jimmy Smith and Reggie Williams is a big question mark.

WR

Brown (Georgia)

53

BAL

They are definitely looking for a guy in the mold of Siragusa and Adams.

DT

Mosley (Missouri)

54

SEA

Alexander is a good bet to be dealt either on draft day or by next season.

RB

Barber (Minnesota)

55

BUF

With their choice of best center or one of a few tackles I think they go center.

C

Spencer (Mississippi)

56

DEN

It’s either corner or safety and with Lynch aging I think safety is more pressing.

S

Bullocks (Nebraska)

57

NYJ

Losing Ferguson was big. He can lessen the blow.

DT

Babineaux (Iowa)

58

GB

Some think they don’t need another young corner, but there are so many good ones.

CB

Browner (Oregon State)

59

ATL

Jasper’s departure leaves a hole in the defensive line so they are forced to take one.

DT

Ellison (Missouri)

60

IND

How about a player who could thrive opposite of Freeney?

DE

Swancutt (Oregon State)

61

SD

They always have strong players at linebacker.

LB

Blackstock (Virginia)

62

PIT

I don’t care what people think of Parker, he’s not a future feature back.

RB

Fason (Florida)

63

PHI

With the position in flux with departure and injuries he’s a solid pick.

TE

Everett (Miami, FL)

64

NE

Their offensive line has taken some hits and needs new blood.

OT

Terry (Syracuse)

65

SF

OT

Munoz (Tennessee)

66

STL

(MIA)

The secondary gets beat too much.

CB

McFadden (Florida State)

67

CLE

No one questions that their linebackers are weak.

LB

Ruud (Nebraska)

68

TEN

This is a good value and a position where they need a good player.

OG

Kemoeatu (Utah)

69

OAK

They are desperate for a good linebacker after losing the disappointing Harris.

LB

Morrison (San Diego State)

70

MIA

(CHI)

Early on he was rated as the top center and I think is a very good value here for a team lacking picks.

C

Wilkerson (LSU)

71

TB

They could also trade for a runner (like Henry) and take one later.

RB

Gore (Miami, FL)

72

DET

Their defense should get a lot of attention in this draft.

CB

Green (Virginia Tech)

73

OAK

(HOU)

(DAL)

With somewhat of a luxury pick they can select a good running back who can provide insurance against Jordan’s inability to carry the full load for a season.

RB

Moats (Louisiana Tech)

74

NYG

With Dayne shipped out and Barber not getting any younger they need a runner.

RB

Morency (Oklahoma State)

75

AZ

How about a replacement for Freddie Jones to go along with their stud receivers.

TE

Dreesen (Colorado State)

76

DEN

(WAS)

Not liking any players early in this draft (obviously) so they’ll be counting on a steal here.

CB

Perkins (Oklahoma)

77

PHI

(KC)

A young tackle to take over when their old ones pack it in.

OT

Britt (Alabama)

78

HOU

Their defense could be making a turn for the better after Buchanon and this guy.

LB

Mitchell (Oklahoma)

79

CAR

Somewhere on day one they will take a running back.

RB

Shelton (Louisville)

80

MIN

Just because they picked up Sharper doesn’t mean they won’t take this guy.

S

Butler (Georgia Tech)

81

STL

You know how Martz loves his toys and Bruce has just about had it.

WR

Gibson (Georgia)

82

NO

They might have taken a safety earlier had things broken their way.

S

Atogwe (Stanford)

83

CIN

After addressing the defense early, now they grab the final piece for their offense.

TE

Jackson (Northern Colorado)

84

BAL

The secondary is very good, but another corner is needed for the future.

CB

Bartell (Howard)

85

SEA

They still need another good linebacker.

LB

McCune (Louisville)

86

BUF

A good tight end has been missing since Riemersma’s prime.

TE

Cross (California)

87

JAX

Fred Taylor isn’t getting any younger.

RB

Houston (Tennessee)

88

NYJ

Let’s talk line help for a team that lives by running the football.

OG

Brooks (Maryland)

89

GB

After missing on quarterback earlier they take their shot here.

QB

Orton (Purdue)

90

ATL

It isn’t sexy, but more help for the offensive line.

OG

Mathis (Alabama)

91

TB

(SD)

A good linebacker is a must for them.

LB

Wallace (Temple)

92

IND

I think they are fed up with Vandy’s antics.

K

Nugent (Ohio State)

93

PIT

Here’s some insurance in case Mays and Randle El aren’t enough.

WR

Mathis (Hampton)

94

PHI

With a lot of picks to play with, I think he might be the best available.

S

Brimmer (UNLV)

95

AZ

(NE)

This one still looks like corner to me. Dennis Green will take him under his wing to ensure that his transition is smooth.

CB

Williams (Oklahoma State)

96

TEN

(COM)

Just another guy who replaces a cap cut. Many think he is the hidden gem on a great Badgers line last year.

DT

Fields (Mississippi State)

97

DEN

(COM)

I know they have Putzier, but they run a lot of two tight end sets and will be looking for someone to line up on the other side.

TE

Bergen (Lehigh)

98

SEA

(COM)

I really believe they will become enamored with some of these second tier quarterbacks and take one.

QB

McPherson (Arena Football)

99

KC

(COM)

Even with Bell, it sure wouldn’t hurt their defense to grab another linebacker who can make some plays.

LB

Lawrence (South Carolina)

100

NE

(COM)

Sooner or later they need to grab a corner.

CB

Wilson (Stanford)

101

DEN

(COM)

They can never have enough good components on their offensive line.

OG

Buenning (Wisconsin)

NFL Mock Draft 2005
Authored by: norcalfella on Monday, May 02 2005
So how did I do? Well, 10 players I had falling in the exact same spot (9.9%) and five others I missed by one spot. 27.72% of the first 3 rounds I landed within 5 spots and 51.5% within 17 spots. 10 guys I really blew it on, and they were pretty much all injury cases and wasn't aware of the extent. 65% of these guys landed within a round of where I said they would.

that's my take
