NFL Predictions 2013: Week 8

Sport

There’s a song that says I can’t complain, but sometimes I still do. I would change it to “I always do” because no matter what I want to have a better week. Last week I was a respectable 10-5 straight up (68-39 overall) while going 7-8 against the spread (53-52-1 overall) and 8-7 on the over/under (58-49 overall). These aren’t bad numbers, but I keep waiting for the huge week to get ahead of Vegas and start to challenge the best of the best picking winners. At 68 winners I am eight behind Ron Jaworski who leads the way and rank #37 among the top 100 or so “pros” from the major networks. This does not make me happy, and I am working on changing it.

A very brief review of Sirius XM

Business

My car came with a 6 month trial subscription to Sirius XM radio.  Initially, my reaction was quite negative:

  • The audio quality is poor.  Either it's the encoding algorithm, or the equalizer settings in the transmitter.  But there are weak mids, and the highs sometimes are a little garbled.
  • Why would I pay for radio, when there are a ton of radio stations, and I can put my entire music collection, ripped at near CD quality, on a thumb drive?

Later, I saw some benefits:

Salad Bars, Freeriders, and A-holes

Politic

Tonight, we went to Sweet Tomatoes, a salad bar restaurant.  With our dinner, we ordered three sodas, and were given three clear, transparent cups.  If, instead, we'd stuck with ater, we'd have been given transparent blue cups.  Several people were filling up their transparent, BLUE cups with soda.

Now, you can assess these "freeriders" two different ways:

  1. They're a-holes.  They knowingly ripped off the restaurant, which will ultimately result in higher costs for everyone.  They expect the rest of us to kick in so that they can get what they want.
  2. They're just smart, playing the game strategically.  After all, they might get free soda.  And if they get caught, all that happens is that they have to pay the fair price.  There's no additional penalty.

NFL predictions 2013: Week 7

Sport

This is starting to get annoying. It seems I am taking a little longer to warm up. I was only 10-5 straight up (58-34 overall) and that’s as good as it was last week. Against the spread I submarined at 6-9 (46-44-1 overall) and went 7-8 on the over/under (50-42 overall). Let’s try to turn this around.

NFL predictions 2013: Week 6

Sport

Is it possible for a week to have felt better than it actually was? Good grief. I was only 9-5 straight up (48-29 overall) and 9-5 against the spread (40-35-1 overall) while going 7-7 on the over/under (43-34 overall). Maybe I should be happy that I remain ahead of Vegas, or that I won a $40 bet on the Browns, breaking my streak of losing the only 2 other bets I made on football.

NFL predictions 2013: Week 5

Sport

Another week of mediocrity for me, but hopefully I will turn it around eventually. I was a serviceable 10-5 straight up (39-24 overall) but flat against the spread (7-7-1, 31-30-1) and over/under (7-8, 36-27). Probably not a good time for me to go to Vegas, where I will be the rest of the week not betting on any of these games. Well, maybe the Thursday night one. Maybe.

NFL predictions 2013: Week 4

Sport

That screaming you hear is my pain after a tough week. I kind of saw it coming. I went just 8-8 straight up (29-19 overall) but managed to also go 8-8 against the spread (24-23-1 overall) to remain in the black there. The lone bright spot was my 10-6 mark on the over/under (29-19 overall). I must admit, it was tough to pick a game like Chargers over the Titans 17-16, then have them leading 17-13 only to watch a Tennessee wide receiver clearly push off while catching the game-winning touchdown. Usually I don’t whine about misses like that, but it was a bad one.

David went 9-7 so now he’s 31-17 and ahead of me.

NFL Predictions 2013: Week 3

Sport

Another week in the books, and another uneven performance from me, but it’s early. I was 10-6 straight up (21-11 overall) and while it could have been better at least I stayed in double digits. I made up for last week against the spread by going 11-5 (16-15-1 overall) so that was good. I gave some away on the over under by going 7-9 though (19-13 overall).

NFL Predictions 2013: Week 2

Sport

I am never happy with early season results, so it should come as no surprise that I had an uneven opening to my campaign. Straight up I went 11-5 and as first weeks go that’s fine. Against the spread I struggled badly at 5-10-1. The lone bright spot was the over/under at a sparkling 12-4. Let’s move on.

NFL Predictions 2013: Week 1 (plus season picks)

Sport

Before we get to the picks for the first week of games, I’m going to do something a little different and reveal my picks for all the games. Every year I like to circle winners for every game based on my first impression, without too much grinding. I find the results interesting, and you might too. It helps me to navigate the early season.
