What's wrong with kids today?

Other Stuff

Glossy news magazines like to characterize generations of kids, as though members have so much in common:

  • Generation X (birthdates from the 1960s to early 1980s) - the MTV generation, doesn't respect authority, is well educated, and is more socially liberal
  • Generation Y (birthdates from early 1980s to early 2000s) - Civic-minded, money-obssessed, and with a narcissistic sense of entitlement
  • Generation Z (birthdates from early 2000s to present) - The "connected" generation grew up with mobile phones, the Internet, and likely unconcerned with ethnicity

While these are fun, I believe there are other characteristics to group people together by.  For example, I propose that we group them by the way in which they get on my nerves.

Today?  I'd like to describe people that annoy me by simultaneously being unable to think for themselves, and beliving they are "the bright ones".  I'll do this by repeating the conversation I heard at the next table at a smoothie stop, in the middle of the last school year after picking my sonl.

I considered making this a "Top n" list, or possibly "Politics".  It's about one of the most important rules you can teach your kids.  Those rules are:

  1. Treat everyone well, even those who don't deserve it.
  2. Life's not fair.
  3. Don't be afraid to lose.

And, on Facebook walls, recently, #2 doesn't appear widely understood...

Dick Cheney Doesn't Care About Truth; Lindsey Graham's A Fool

As details emerge  about the NSA's wiretapping/snooping on pretty much everybody's online data, former VP Dick Cheney jumps in to defend it.

"As everybody who's been associated with the program's said, if we had had this before 9/11, when there were two terrorists in San Diego — two hijackers — had been able to use that program, that capability, against that target, we might well have been able to prevent 9/11," Cheney said on "Fox News Sunday."

And Sen. Lindsey Graham, S.C., a hawkish Republican who's vocally defended the NSA practices, suggested another attack is even made more likely if the monitoring is curtailed.

"I believe we should be listening to terrorists, known terrorist emails, following their emails and following their phone calls. And if they're emailing somebody and the United States or calling a number in the United States, I would like to get a judge's position to monitor that phone call," Graham said on "Meet the Press" on NBC. "If we don't do that, another attack on our homeland is very likely."

On buying a car (part 2)

Sci & Tech

I bought a Ford Fusion Hybrid, having investigated all of the options, and having previously had a strong bias in favor of Hondas, and against American cars  My past cars were '66 VW Karmann Ghia, '92 Honda Civic Si, and '97 Toyota Avalon.

I should explain why I made the decision I did...

On buying a car (part 1)

I recently got rid of my decrepit car, and replaced it with a 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid.  This may surprise people. In the past, I've argued that used cars (especially 2-3 years old) were the better deal, and that hybrid technology is too immature to be cost-effective.  So, using a 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid, a 2013 Ford Fusion (Gas), and a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, let's investigate the following questions:

1) Which is a better deal, used or new?

2) Is now the time to buy a hybrid?

This is not a paid endorsement. Kettle foods isn't paying me. I think they may be trying to kill me.

Three facts you may already know about me, and which are almost certainly documented on this website (though I'm not able to find such documentation, right now):

  1. Once I open a package, if I'm eating from the package, it is a single serving.

  2. My favorite “junk food” is chips

  3. I believe the greatest chip, of all time, was Kettle Chips Red Chili flavor

NFL Predictions 2012: Super Bowl XLVII

The playoffs have not been an overall success for me this season. I was 1-1 straight (7-3 overall) and can live with that. I went 2-0 against the spread (5-5 overall) and 0-2 on the over/under (4-6) which means the best I can hope for is breaking even in the playoffs versus Vegas. Now I have to deal with a very difficult Super Bowl to predict.

NFL Predictions 2012: Championship Games

It was another uneven playoff week for me, a losing one in fact. I was 2-2 straight up (6-2 in playoffs) but 1-3 against the spread (3-5) and 2-2 on the over/under (4-4). Against Vegas my winning week went out the window when Atlanta decided not to sweat out a win over Seattle and instead let them back in the game, failing to cover and allowing the game to go over. The result was a 3-5 week for me instead of 5-3 because of that comeback and as difficult as these playoffs have been to predict that is really frustrating. Worse yet, now there is really no room for error.

NFL Predictions 2012: Divisional Round

I never expected to repeat last season’s success (19-3 against Vegas) so I’ll have to settle for being half-perfect. I nailed the NFC and fell apart in the AFC where “betting” is concerned. I went 4-0 straight up, 2-2 against the spread and 2-2 for the over/under. Let’s see if I can rebound this week.

NFL Predictions 2012: Wild Card

Overall the regular season was a success. My final week I went 11-5 straight up (173-82-1 overall) and in my recollection that is the second most wins I have ever recorded. I was 10-6 against the spread (137-110-9 overall) which might be the best I have ever done in any season. Unfortunately I was just 5-11 on the over under (119-133-3 overall) and if I could understand my misery in that category I would have corrected it long ago.
