Back up

Sci & TechAfter a serious period of database corruption, Small.to is (mostly) back up.
It took only 2 SQL commands to fix, but I haven't had the time/energy to do that, until recently, since we have a new puppy.

On buying a car (part 2)

Sci & Tech

I bought a Ford Fusion Hybrid, having investigated all of the options, and having previously had a strong bias in favor of Hondas, and against American cars  My past cars were '66 VW Karmann Ghia, '92 Honda Civic Si, and '97 Toyota Avalon.

I should explain why I made the decision I did...

If you're stuck with MS Office

Sci & Tech

Personally, I find it amazing that people pay for MS Office at home.  LibreOffice seems in many ways its equal, in a few ways inferior, and inf a few ways superior.  But that's not what this post is about.  If you are stuck using MS Office, and someone sends you something that's in Adobe Acrobat (.PDF) format, and you want to edit it...you're pretty well screwed.

Math equation for a perfect ass

Sci & Tech

Now, I happen to believe that there is a degree of science involved in human perceptions of beauty.

But this is hogwash.

The manual for none of us

Sci & Tech

Well, it seemed like a good idea.  I had a cute graphic mocked up, from Flatulent Press, "Small.to for Morons", "You, too, can submit stories and they'll stay "Secret"", And the moron on the cover says, "I have to pee."

Acrobat Alternative

Sci & Tech

So, all the modern word processors (including MS Word and OpenOffice) let you export PDF files.

And I've always used the Adobe Acrobat reader to view them.  But some of my netfriends have recommended FoxIt.

Jeweled detritus

Sci & Tech

Ruby on Rails is a popular web development kit, which uses the object-oriented scripting language, Ruby, and the web development framework known as MVC.

I think a handful of site (including Twitter) were built with RoR, and it's amazing how quickly you can implement some pretty powerful stuff.

Shocking that I never linked to this, before

Sci & Tech

A long time ago, I read (with some weird fascination) an article jwz posted about the survival advantages of mediocrity, when it comes to software design.

Autotune killed the radio star

Sci & Tech

I've made statements in the past, about how much I dislike the misuse of autotune.

Cher's "Believe" was a clever use.

T-Pain made it useful at first.

But Ke$ha's use makes me wish her mother hadn't brushed her teeth with Jack Daniels when pregnant.

And the Autotune the News guys were funny, at first, but I'm tiring of it.

Or ismy complaining jealoousy?

When bing makes it a game, I'll list theirs, too...

Sci & Tech

I am a little disappointed, since Google dropped me as an ad publisher.  But praise is due:  they managed to make a game out of improving their picture tagging on  their image search.  You can pair up with a partner, competing to see how quickly you can come up with the same word when looking at a given picture.
