A very brief review of Sirius XM

Business

My car came with a 6 month trial subscription to Sirius XM radio.  Initially, my reaction was quite negative:

  • The audio quality is poor.  Either it's the encoding algorithm, or the equalizer settings in the transmitter.  But there are weak mids, and the highs sometimes are a little garbled.
  • Why would I pay for radio, when there are a ton of radio stations, and I can put my entire music collection, ripped at near CD quality, on a thumb drive?

Later, I saw some benefits:

On buying a car (part 1)

Business

I recently got rid of my decrepit car, and replaced it with a 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid.  This may surprise people. In the past, I've argued that used cars (especially 2-3 years old) were the better deal, and that hybrid technology is too immature to be cost-effective.  So, using a 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid, a 2013 Ford Fusion (Gas), and a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, let's investigate the following questions:

1) Which is a better deal, used or new?

2) Is now the time to buy a hybrid?

As I was seeing that Leo and John did it again, I thought back to how many niches and specialties and facilitators there are serving e-commerce.

Maybe it'll work for AdBrite, too..

Business

Certain word matches lead to higher AdSense commissions.

For example, if you need a mesothelioma lawyer, apparently you may find one by clicking on an ad.  And doing so could be very lucrative to the website that displayed the ad.

Ditto for mortgage refinance.

Of course, it's mind-blowing that how to register a domain name gets you that kind of bank.  (And honestly, if you know me, ask me...don't click on links.)

Consider this your EOY 2010 reminder to click on any ads you see here, that might interest you.  It might make me some $$.

What the hey, AdBrite?

What's with the frquent, persistent "buy Viagra online" ads you keep serving?  Is this some sort of clickfraud prevention technique?  (I mean, I'm tempted to click on the ads, just to see if they're connected to something.  they just seem so far beyond credible...

Changes in store

Business

Several forces have made me reconsider how Small.to is run:

  • Google revoked my Adsense account
  • The variety of features that made up the site turned out to not be popular.  People come for the stories, and only the stories
  • CMS and blog tools have developed since I first put up the site years ago.
  • Spammers have orchestrated repeated campaigns to taint my referral and stats pool.
  • Facebook became huge

So, here's my thinking:
