A penny here, a penny there...but which month?

Business

If I'm not mistaken, I've introduced norcalfella, futurenow, and DougieFresh (not sure he's a member of Small.to, but he's married to Jill) to each other.  And their common frugality led to a passed-around spreadsheet identifying the least expensive place to purchase a variety of items.

(e.g., I think paper products were cheapest at Costco, disposable diapers were cheapest at Wal-Mart, Albertson's had the least expensive fresh fruit...)

But when is the best time to buy which things?

Measuring the speed of light using a microwave oven and chocolate

Business

If you know that microwaves use standing waves (I didn't), and know that the resonant frequency of water molecules is 2.5GHz (I didn't, but it would be easy enough to look up), you can use the variance in microwave's melting of chocolate to estimate the speed of light, c.

NFL Predictions 2008: Championship Games

Business

This has been a very unpredictable series of games even though only one game (Atlanta/Arizona) has been a rematch. Nevertheless I have managed to stay on top of it. Last week I was 2-2 straight up, 2-2 against the spread and 3-1 playing the over/under. Considering the huge Arizona upset no one (other than Yahoo’s Michael Silver) predicted was possible I am happy with that showing. It left me exactly 5-3 in all categories for the playoffs. Overall I am now 168-95-1 (63.6%) straight up, 135-118-11 against the spread and 135-22-7 on the over/under.

Pizza, Falafel, Tiramisu, and Gyros

BusinessI've recently been startled at a more common business in this area:  pizza places which
  • are owned by Arabs
  • have the name "New York" somewhere in their name
  • serve non-pizza food (like falafel, tiramisu, gyros)
  • are surprisingly good, and reasonably priced
  • seem to be run by folks who don't know much about running a restaurant
I was trying to oput it all together, when I noticed a box in the kitchen of one, recently.

Spam? But I'm a Jewish vegetarian!

BusinessI see the spammers have had a happy holiday season.  I had over 1500 bounced e-mail messages, yesterday, in my inbox.  So let me be perfectly clear.

I DO NOT SEND SPAM MESSAGES.  I DON'T WANT TO SELL YOU OEM SOFTWARE.  IF YOUR GENITALIA ARE UNSATISFYING IN SOME WAY, THERE'S NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT IT.  WANT TO GET LAID?  GOOD LUCK WITH THAT.  I'M NOT GOING TO HELP.

Look:  I'm sorry folks are sending you unsolicited, commercial e-mails that appear to originate at Small.to.  But it ain't me.  Really.  And there's precious little I can do about it.  Unless...
