I wanna hang out witchu

FoodThe people who put together "Cheap Eats", a blog dedicated to---oh, for heaven's sakes, it's named like just what it is----are my kind of people.

Mr. Le, Mr. Le, Hey Mr. Le

FoodWhy did nobody tell me about banh mi?  I mean, the way we discovered them was this:  on the way back from a volleyball tournament, it was clear we needed to get some food into Zachary before he fell asleep for the day.  As we passed enticing Indian restaurant after enticing Indian restaurant, he sleepily rejected them.  Finally he chose a restaurant---get this---because it had black ironwork chairs out front.  As we approached, and I found that it was a sandwich shop, I was irritated.

"I can't believe we're going to a sandwich shop, given the other places available!"

When we stepped inside of Lee's Sandwiches , though, I knew it wasn't "just a sandwich shop"...

She Sells Sea Shells

FoodIn Proust's Remembrance of Things Past, a character dunks a seashell shaped cake.  While I've never read the book, I have let my son eat these "Madelines", which he adores.  Turns out they're easy to make.

It's what's for lunch

FoodMy sister and b-i-l flew in from CO, and we picked up Mom and headed over to M&D's house for Thanksgiving.  Fun time had by all, blah-blah-blah.
On the way home, we passed through Davis, and Gwen suggested we go to Sudwerk for lunch.  (Yeah, yeah, I know...what made them say it was hu:bsch, rather than scho:n?  But that's not the point of this story.)

Be jealous of norcalfella and me

FoodJust around the corner from our houses (ok, 1 mile away), where Ralph's used to be, a 99 Ranch market's moving in!  Say hello to unusual produce, veggie ham, a full aisle of instant ramen, those fresh Taiwanese noodles that I think are awesome when stirfried, inexpensive sesame seeds and oils, etc.

And across the street from the 99 Ranch?  A Korean BBQ place!

Just like it was left to go bad at the marina

FoodI've heard tell of sourdough cultures passed on from baker to baker, with the "sourbugs" evolving and maturing and whatnot.  And I've thought, "hey, I wanna be a part of that germ warfare.  How can I get me some?"

Behold, MeFi to the rescue!

Yeah, but don't drink the water

FoodI've always contended that Mexican food in Southern California is superior to anything in Northern California.  I take heat for it from my fellow Norcalfellas, but I maintain that I'm right.  And the food's inexpensive, too.

But here's what kills me.  We just got back from San Diego.  And I figured out (I think) why Mexican food is better in Southern California.

Fad diets I should totaly start

FoodPeople just love a 'quick fix', or something quirky that works, or something that allows them to relinquish something unimportant in order to get a gain they appreciate.

That's why fat-burning pills, diets-of-the-moment, crack, and lap dances exist.  God knows what made my mind go from weight loss to drugs to adult entertainment, but it can't stay there.

In any case, here are my first handful of "fad diets" that I strongly suspect would work (if, by "work" you mean lead to weight loss), and which people might find easier than eating responsibly and staying active.  If you have other outlandish ideas, post 'em to the comments.

I hate those guys

FoodI enjoy the reviews at The Impulsive Buy.

And this latest one is no exception.

Their review of the McD's Asian Chicken salad is very funny.

Shavin' is hard

FoodReally?  You need this kind of info to figure out how to shave?
