Pete's Lecture Series: The Long Wave Cycle vol. 2

BusinessNote: future segments in this series will be posted for logged-in users only.

Suspended in time and space for a moment, you feel a crisp winter wind blowing across the tundra. Echoes vibrate from a dreary Siberian prison camp. Twilight paints the pre-dawn skies over the sullen, arctic permafrost. The year is 1938. A worn out, emaciated figure with torn clothing trudges in shackles and chains, nearing the time when he will draw his last breath. He once lived a very different life of moderate prosperity in the 1920s Soviet Union. But this man is now a slave, sentenced by dictator Joseph Stalin in an insult-ridden, fixed trial to “count the birch trees” in his gulag. Such was the punishment the man received in return for his diligent, insightful work, the work of a true genius. The man’s name: Nikolai Dimetrievich Kondratieff. Occupation: economist. Crime: thinking for himself.

Economic truth revealed?

BusinessSay what you want about my friend, Peter (link removed). I mean it. Say he needed my help to make it through Control Systems Engineering (and then beat my score on the final). Say he's eccentric. Say his cynicism and condescention have held him back. Say he doesn't like banana splits enough. Some of that (especially the first) might be true.

But here's the thing: Peter's damn smart. And he isn't afraid to take an unknown, unusual, or even unpopular viewpoint.
And Pete's been sending me these evaluations of the economy, lately, that he's given me permission to repost here. I'll give you the first two, publicly. After that, they'll end up posted for registered, logged-in users only. Membership has its privileges

NFL Predictions 2005: Week 12

BusinessA lot of people struggled last week, and I wasn’t in that group. Sure, there were some upsets and I went 11-5 straight up (109-51) but plenty of those predicting games went completely in the tank. I was 8-8 vs. the point spread (85-72-3) and 11-5 on the over/under (86-70-3). Bring on the turkeys.
