Not the Book I Started, But the One I Finished

One of the unexpected joys of retirement is that a project can start anywhere and end up somewhere completely different.

Last summer I wrote a short allegory about my dog — a meditation on “this too shall pass” — and posted it on Facebook. A friend said it sounded like a children’s book.

I’d also been two chapters into writing a sci-fi novel and was completely stuck. So I did what any reasonable person would do: I rewrote the dog story as a children’s book, taught myself Scribus for layout and Krita for illustration and paint editing, and published it.

It’s called Lambo and the Wind.

I’m already on the second edition, having learned considerably more about publishing than I knew when I started the first one.

The sci-fi novel is still waiting. Lambo is…still restless, but not in the book.
