I’m Looking At The Man In The Mirror

In 2013, NYMag published this excellent extract from 31 self-improvement books.

I’m curious about the veracity of some, such as:

  • “After greeting someone, immediately clap your hands, then raise your handshake hand toward their heart.” What’s the second part of this about?
  • “When your creativity is blocked, cross your arms.”
  • ” If someone is doing something in a way that is better than average, don’t point it out—if they realize they aren’t “normal,” they might adjust their behavior.”
  • “Don’t be too nice. Charming and kind can grow monotonous. Try inflicting some pain instead. Make your target feel guilty or insecure. The lower the lows, the higher the highs.”

That said, there’s gold in them thar hills.
